Happy 25th Birthday: 1986 Shelby GLHS

Just a shout out of recognition to hitting The Big Two-Five for Carroll's first Dodge model to come out of his new Whittier, California facility. It was 25 years ago that he announced plans to produce a special version based on the GLH Turbo and designate it the GLH Shelby (later he was known to refer to the car as the GLH Somemore). The initial prototype rolled out about this time twenty-five years ago, and customer shipments began around June.

Here's a collection of some of my favorite examples of the '86 GLHS.

Although not a GLHS I remember my only new car purchase was a 1986 GLH Turbo that I bought in late 1985. Added the Mopar upgrade computer when it came out for the turbo 1 motor. I drove that car for 12 years every day till it rusted out. I still have parts from it in my basement. Great memories.

Re: Happy 25th Birthday: 1986 Shelby GLHS

Here's a pic of my old GLHS #420 from about 2002. Paint was faded badly, the rain that day did wonders to make it look glossy. I did enjoy my time with the car; made a short throw shifter, added seats from a Shelby Charger since the originals were thrashed, ended up with a 2.5TII/555 combo but kept the rod linkage. I did my best to stay away from cutting up the car for any mods; or if a piece was modified it was only a bolt-on affair. The scoop is from a Rampage with the 2.2 package on a regular Omni hood. It was my daily from August of 2000 until Sept 2004 when an accident took it out of comission. Now it resides broken and in storage in the hands of a collector somewhere near the Chicago area.

My car is #408. I just started a project log on it and have some pictures there with more to come.

Like In my signature, #161 1986 4dr. Over 175,000 miles on it. Charger seats. A555. ANOTHER engine built for it. Lots of odds and ends to replace.Click image for larger version.

It's hard to believe I'm getting that old! Maybe we can get Carroll out to SDAC to celebrate with us? Work on that Barry, it is within the realm of possibilities.

here's a cool pix taken at the Larz Auto Museum just outside of Boston, summer of 2008, i think this was one of the larger (if not the largest) gatherings of 86S cars in New England at one event:

^great to shoot for but maybe not going to be easy. for example, Jonny would have to bring both #141 and #215 since he owns both now (he only owned #141 when the pix was taken and both are included in the group of cars in the picture). and we need Seth to finish his 86S (ya right thats never going to happen). the stars were aligned perfectly the day this pix was taken, not sure if that will happen again.

#088 here. Glad to see you were able to get back in Mark. The wheels are off of the Daytona at the top of the page. Same set.
