    Re: Timing Belt Tensioner Trick

Or, remove timing belt and not care and...

    1. Roll engine to TDC by hand and watch for the mark on the flywheel and set it to zero. Some have 2 marks so I pull the #1 or #4 plug and make sure it is at the top.

    2. Pull distributor cap, and make sure it is pointed at the #1 cyl

    3. Line up marks on cam sprocket, while keep tension on the front side of belt.

    4. Set belt tension.

    5. Set ign timing

    6. DONE!

Then you know for sure... Seems every time I have tried to "save" the alignment I end up double checking it a few days later. Its so easy to do it from scratch, and know its correct that's how I do it now

I have "saved" them a bunch of times.. On the VNT car I just put a head on.. I even did it.. Did the zip tie/bungee thing.. installed a different head and the cam wasn't in the right place... So I just took the old cam gear and tinkered back and forth until the key way was in the right spot.... and bam... done deal..

I can't even count how many times I have used that 'trick'

No, what AJ said about keeping everything on time when doing a headgasket, zip tie the cam gear to the belt so it dont move so you can put it all back together without re-setting the timing.
