    5th gear holding tool.

The service tool that slips over the I-shaft and over the end of the input shaft 5th gear locking it stationary so that nut can be removed. Any creative minds out there who have made their own and care to share ? I have some scrap plate steel laying around that I was going attempt cutting something out following the picture in the fsm as a guide.

1/4" scrap steel, did some cutting and it works great. It was pretty easy.

I just held the gear with my hand. Had a glove on, though. And used an impact gun.

The tool is really need it to properly torque it back down. Impact to remove is fine.

I've done it many times numerous ways. Impact gun off and back on again without any ill effects. The service manual states that you MUST replace that big nut after its removed, but I've never had a problem re-using it after 10's of thousands of miles and numerous installations / removals.
A Ford fan wrench fits that flat spot on the gear perfectly.

Might not be up to Team GRM scaries standards but it worked. Adding a strap across the end before next usage though.

A short(1/2") length of large diameter(2 1/2 - 3") PVC pipe cut so it looks like a half moon or a parenthesis ")" stuck in between the gears works really well. Essentially the same method as using a rag.

The rag is so much easier.

It didnt take that long to make and it holds the end of the gear very securely. Rag seems like a good way to damage something.

I had a peice made very similar to that. I used some scrap angle iron and made it into a figure 8 shape. It held fine to 200 ft/lb, then started deforming. A little extra support and it will be fine for the next time. The factory tool is really slick, I made a stencil but didn't get around to having someone with a lazer/water jet cut it out.
