    Fuel pump lock ring tips?

I am trying to change the fuel pump out on my car and I spent all day hammering it and it will not move. I put some PB on it I hit one of the tabs on it enough to bend it up. The ring right now is all mangled up I am frozen, anyone got any tricks to removing a super rusted on ring?

(I have a feeling most people with tips with be from the north)

mopar rust spray and lots of patience
keep spraying and tapping with a hammer
some compressed air tp blow out rust every so often ( watch the eyes ) helps
Kinda hard in the car , but work your way around the ring hitting in different spots
I like to use a brass punch for spark reasons but sometimes you need to go in with a small hand chisel
To get in good on the tab on to make a "new" tab

I just use pb blast and a small flat head to cut a line in the rust around the edge and then to tap the tabs with a hammer.

I've had good luck with a flat head and a rubber mallet(I've only removed the ring from empty tanks though) Someone mention brass and is a good precaution.

Re: Fuel pump lock ring tips?

OK after 2 days of solid failing I have some tips and some questions. First thing is you do not have to drop the tank on a P body to remove the pump. I did not want to drop the tank due to the rusty shape the strap bolts were in and so I had to do the “uber hard task of death” that’s removing the pump with the tank in the car, everyone told me it would suck a lot, but I am not joking the pump just about fell out of the tank it without joking took less than 5 seconds to remove the pump from the tank.

Next thing I would like to say is it looks like the TBI pumps are not all the same? I have a pump out of a 89 TBI van and I am attempting to put it in my 89 TBI sundance but the van pump is a lot more narrow than the sundance pump anyone know why this is? And is there any way to get that skinny pump to work?

Another thing I found out when I pulled out the sending unit first. A really easy way to tell the pump from the sending unit is the pump has a larger diameter hole, I hope that helps someone not fail like I did.

My pump only had to wires and one hose coming from it.

Re: Fuel pump lock ring tips?

I do know for a fact that in the G and J bodies, starting in 1991, all the fuel pumps are the same no matter if its V-6, TBI, Turbo I, Turbo III, etc. When I went from TBI -> turbo in my '92, EVERYONE on the internet ragged and ragged that I couldn't re-use my TBI fuel pump with the turbo application. Everyone couldn't have been more wrong.

The G and J bodies also used the same size clutches no matter the powerplant. However, the P-bodies seemed to have lived until at least 1994 with the smaller pressure plates.
