87 - 89 alternators and belts

My car is an '87, and I had an '89 motor built for it.

As I started putting it all back together, I noticed the water pump pulley was out of alignment from the crank. I shimmed it out till it fit.
Well now of course as I put the alternator in, it's now not lined up.

If I bought an alternator for an '89, would it line up? Can I get a different pulley?

Or, is there different crank pulleys?

Are you using round tooth belt?

I can assure you that alternator is not the problem. They have the same mounting points thoughout the years.

Which water pump pulley are you using? The '87 uses a 4-groove belt; the '89+ uses a smooth pulley since it's driven off the back side of the belt.

I'm using a square tooth timing belt.
I stuck with my '87 water pump and pulley (groove belt). It didn't line up with the crank so I shimmed it. I'm assuming if I took the shim out, it would line up with the alternator.

The alternator/AC comp bracket. Is it slotted and adjustable??

Well looking at it, no I can't adjust the bracket.

Well since this is getting into non-electrical, I'm starting a new thread in the engine section.
