jam something up in the flexplate and use a box wrench and a hammer to loosen the bolts?

ive always been able to just whack at a box wrench with a hammer to get them loose without jamming up the flexplate though

Well, she is pretty much ready to come out.
After I got the torque converter bolts out, removed the starter, pulled my wires and hose out of the way, speedo cable, trans cooler hoses, and took out all but the two side bellhousing bolts.
Looks like the van has alot more room to work. It almost looks like if i could get the trans mount out without having to lower it much, i might be able to leave the front motor mount on.
Need to get a transmission jack from harbor freight. Hopefully that makes the rest easier.

Re: Intro and Update: Slugmobile and Mean Mini! (long read, but worth it)

Looks like I'm getting rained out today.
I knew i should have got out there late yesterday afternoon, but didn't feel much like it after a full day of running around.
I did pick up a horrible freight transmission jack yesterday. And proceeded to have both brass zerk fittings break off when i tried putting some grease in. I'll have to easy-out the piece, hopefully then replace them.
If there is any break in the weather, I may try but it looks like it will be on and off rain all day and tonight.
    Wish I had a shop!

Well, i won the battle today, and just before i had to leave for work.
But, like most battles it came at some personal expense. My back hurts!

Still have to deal with this, to try to get the diff out. Will be cutting the CV cup off to attempt diff removal.

I am not looking forward to trying to re-install this. If I attempt it I'm definitely going to need some help.

While not a great plan, I can't think of much else. I'm going to continue cutting like this, then angle the cutoff wheel to try and take off what's left hopefuly down to the seal surface diameter. Might have to grind some also.
I wish it was out far enough to simply lop off with a porta-band. But, if you haven't figured out by now, I don't have that sort of luck.

Re: Intro and Update: Slugmobile and Mean Mini! (long read, but worth it)

What diff. is in trans. this Wayne??

If it's a stock type you could pound the broken part out from the other side.

You would have to remove the cover to access and remove the the diff pin. first.

    Best of luck!!

    Thanks

Wayne, there's a special CV removal tool used for cars that have circlips on the CV axle stubs. It looks like a flat crowfoot that screws to the end of a slide hammer. Auto parts stores rent them...

Chris, I did rent one. But the crowfoot thing couldn't get up behind the CV. If it would have been the other axle, it would work. But that recessed area just wouldn't let the crowfoot get between there.

    See? Luck = 0

In other news, I did talk to PTC today, and they quoted about $250 to change the spline and to tighten it up and lower the stall.

transmission re & re is much easier if you use an engine crane to lower it out and raise it back up into the car
I can't begin to imagine trying to shove an automatic back up from below by hand ..OUCH

Sorry Randy, missed replying to you.
I do have the Peloquin LSD, so it is a straight shot through. I did try that very thing, several times.

I didn't get a chance to do anything with it before work on Saturday, but I've got all 3 batteries charged up and have plenty of cutoff wheels. ..
So I will eventually overcome..... hopefully!
Those CV joint cups are thicker than you might think! And after this part is cut off, the next pieces will be even thicker.

So now that it's out and on the ground, you've put a drive through and pounded the crap out of it and it still wouldn't budge?

    Yes.
Although in my conversations about it with Gary Peloquin, he wanted me to let him extract the piece, so he can try to minimize further damage. He did say he'll recondition it. Likely it might need a new case, since the ring gear side is the big piece. If it has damaged that axle area too badly.

About to go out there and burn up these batteries in a few minutes!

Almost al the way around. And then comes the tough part.

I should get another lithium battery or two. The one i have is way better than the NiCad's.
