    Thanks Simon!
I was investigating some cooling issues in another thread. But, even with the CSR electric water pump the coolant gets pushed to the overflow during a run (heavy load/boost).
I dicussed with Warren Hall, and it is similar to what James Reeves had seen in the past.
My theory is, is it possible for combustion gas at high cylinder pressure to get into the water jacket between the layers of the Cometic gasket? The top and bottom layer have thst coating, but the individual steel layers do not.
If the head comes off in the future, i think i'll try spraying each layer individually with copper spray.
I had issues with my Cometic in my 8 valve too, couldn't get the damn thing to seal, but it does work in my TIII?

What symptoms did you observe to say it didn't seal? What I am describing? It does not push into the coolant whrn it is just normal use.

I put it together and put it in my Shadow to break it in, it went 11.70 first pass and was super rich, also had way to much bottom end, went from 1.62 60 ft. to 1.80, was a spinning mess, should be better in the van..

Re: Intro and Update: Slugmobile and Mean Mini! (long read, but worth it)

    MeanMini update:
So it seems after a bit of research into just which replacement fuel tank i ordered, I find out the Spectra Premium does not have a baffled sump. So, i need to think about the best solution.

When Brian had the van there for the engine rebuild, he did a list of other maintenence replacement items, including the new Walbro 255 in-tank pump, new fuel sender, and new fuel tank.
I didn't expect to have to mess with it "ever" again.
So as i'm sure there are several options, i wouldn't mind hearing some suggestions keeping in mind i do still intend on having Mini available for daily pleasure driving.

The most obvious is replace the tank with a baffled sump model. But, would that need further modifying for drag racing in mind?
Or, replace the tank or modify the existing and try to have a sump cut in, and rethink the pump arrangement? Maybe use an external?

I think i need to keep the budget low, for a variety of reasons.

Would a large U-shaped baffle about 2" tall (and a 4-5" radius) tack welded to the floor of the tank around the pump suction with the open part of the U facing the front of the vehicle be enough to keep the sock submerged on hard launches?

I'd like to be able to race with about a 1/4 tank of fuel.

Wayne, have you considered a fuel pump module, I believe they were used in Caravans from around 1993.

One of its purposes was to eliminate tank baffles.

    Thanks

I'll have a look around www.rockauto.com and see if i can find what you are referring to.
As Gary mentioned, those hydramats must be made of gold filament or something $230 for a 11x11 pad? Yikes.

    Do you mean this?
It is pump and sending unit. The tank looks similar shape but only one opening.
Looks like it would still be susceptible to the sloshing at launch.

I really don't see how that helps. Still just has the small sock, so if that gets uncovered during sloshing, then would still draw in air. Or am i missing something?

The pump is mounted inside the housing, which is filled with fuel, I think by the return line. If the sock is uncovered it draws out of the housing until it's covered up again (or the housing runs dry lol).

At least that's how I assume it works.

I guess the return flow would help.

Pricing on this particular one is a bit high, but something like this would certainly help eliminate fuel starvation issues. It's a reservoir that fills full of fuel with your tank's pump, then has it's own pump that feeds your rail. I have seen several 700+hp track cars running these without having any starvation issues.
