+2 to that. If your using a gasket and RTV and is still leaking, suspect a bent thermostat cover.

Our O-Ringed Thermostat housings were designed to resolve the leaking issues. They look nice too.

Well there you go. The REAL fix is to have the hole repaired with a heli coil or with a time sert. If your grease monkey is using things like JB weld to fix stripped threads on a cylinder head, I'd be shopping not for a new car but a different monkey.

While I won't be as harsh, I agree. If he used JB Weld there is no way the bolt is tight enough to seal.

Remove the thermostat housing, install a heli-coil, get one of the housings that uses an O-ring, install a new thermostat, and enjoy.

Why would it crack the head?

Time to find a new mechanic also.

Re: yet again two big problems with the turbo z

Yes the JB Weld cures harder but it is not stronger. The hardness makes it brittle. If you torgue the housing bolt to spec it will strip the JB Weld threads.

Acquire the correct size heli-coil then remove the housing. When you drill the head to install the heli-coil you are going to be removing the JB Weld. When you install the heli-coil be sure to use the permanent Loc-tite and let the Loc-tite cure before installing the bolt.

You don't need to loctite helicoils in place.

If your engine is tired, or you want more power etc, then the T2 is a great idea.

Re: yet again two big problems with the turbo z

Lucky for you, the Daytona engine bay gives you just enough room to do the heli-coil without having to pull the radiator. Worst case scenario, you may have to unbolt the front motor mount and pry the engine backwards a little, depending on the size of your drill.

As for the TII question- Do you mean you have a fresh TII turbocharger, or an entire engine package?

Re: yet again two big problems with the turbo z

I'm repulsed by the JB weld nay saying in this thread. However, I'm more shocked at the fact that a mechanic did that for money. +1 for a new mechanic.

I don't mean to be a jerk while answering your next question so don't take it that way.

If you are taking the thermostat housing to the shop, there is no way I would recommend you attempt to convert your car to TII. Keep it TI and enjoy driving it.

Well, it won't be too bad to drop in the motor and convert the 86 electronics to 87' TII. It's a commitment though.
