Warren, is this just so you can recreate the head via porting? You're not looking to make cast copies right?

warren if u want to digitize in 3 dimensions ( u could use a summagraphics digitizing table ). the table would give u two points .The third point you can control by physically moving the table .100 of an inch across the face of the head

I'm thinking cast versions should be do-able once it's digitised though, if you can rapid prototype it in wax then get a lost wax cast done of it.... would probably need as much cleaning and machining as CNCing from a stocker though..... but at least you'll have the file for when there's no more cores.

The cost with creating a new casting would be very high. I had a co worker get tired of working for a big company, so he decided to compete against them. To make molds and cast a prototype of his product (under floor HVAC diffuser) cost him $60,000-70,000. This did not include a per piece production run, just a proof of concept.

Don that's pretty much how the +1 & BV heads from DC/MP or Arrow racing (whatever you choose to call it) were done. Wasn't done by Chinese workers but judging from the hit or miss quality of the porting, they were obviously not all real skilled at porting heads. Seen some that were lucky if they could outflow a stocker.

I was considering this for my 782 heads, but haven't had time for it.

The digitizer's probe would have had a heck of a time reading all the bumps, voids, and chatter marks anyways....

With all the companies doing CNC heads the problem is not getting the port shape, reinforcements, or chamber mods done it's making a new casting that can handle all those changes without the many hours of welding that's needed to add the material that's not there on the stock one...

Warrens is so cut that he may end up have 1 out of 5 that are usable after copying his just from core shift. But like my head too is all cut, nothing added. But that doesn't mean another stock head will take the .300" cut I made in the roof and not hit water with core shift

    Warren,
I spoke with Brian, an engineer at Trick Flow, today he has no problem digitizing what you have. He asked that you contact them directly to speak about the details though.

They are even willing to do custom CNC port work for anything... I may see about them doing my head. I might get a discount anyway lol.

That would be killer it trick flow could make a performance head for our cars using all the data warren has accumulated over the years, taking out all the weakness and building a kicka$$ flowing head

Unfortunately, casting processes alone just for a sample production is well over $150,000. I don't think our market is that large. But they could CNC port them to Warren's specs.

    Re: Cyl. head copying

Well I can understand wanting a stock head CNC ported, but if a class allows free heads, then slapping a hybrid together seems better bang per buck.
