2-3 flare? I can't figure it out, WTF?

A fellow turbo mopar had his 91 Shadow trans rebuilt last year before he knew about me, it worked fine he said for a bit but had a 2-3 flare that wasn't there before the rebuild. Finally the flare got so bad that 3rd was almost gone, enter me.

I take the the trans apart, find nothing out of the ordinary except the clutch pack for 3rd was done, at least .200" clearance, drum worn and other minor items, they had basically done a stock rebuild.

So I do the usual stuff, valve body mods-nothing was sticking or worn BTW, blocked the 1-2 accumulator, replaced the rear clutch and band-put a Neon spring in-they same softer, tightened everything up.

Well, it is ok on a very slight throttle but get on it, it still flares, maybe a 3 on the 10 scale? I check the servo piston spring, ok, even tried another valve body, no go?

So here we are, WTF, I've never had a trans flare after I've gone thru it? Any idea's?

Did you Air check it before you put the valve body back on?

I hope you can figure something out, I have been fighting this exact same issue for 2 years now. 2 valve bodies, blocked the accumulator, adjusted line pressure, nothing has worked.

I've done maybe a dozen rebuilds, NEVER had this problem,

His TC let go so the trans is coming out of course, so I'll go over it again and see if i missed anything or its just one of those things!

I've never had an issue, I do have a manual vb, maybe I'll put that in and see if it goes away.

Probably a front clutch problem, drum or ring or bushing wear indicated, can also mean fluid supply to front clutch is weak for upgraded motors. Increasing apply pressure can cure.

Drum was replaced due to wear from the band, bushing ok, air checked ok, line pressure has been raised.

I doubt it, I tightened them up like I always do.

I thought this was usualy an end play issue with the 3 speeds. MAybe a buggered up or incorrect select shim?

Which end? Just coz my old trans had about 300 thou endplay on the input shaft but it never got 2-3 flare.... just carved up the oil pump with the clutch drum and made funny noises that sounded like rod knock or a broken flexplate.

Man, it's been about 4 years since I pulled apart a 3 speed. I remember it being about half way down, but without a manual, I can't help you.

Nope, end play in spec. The flare is really caused by too much clutch play or the band releasing too slow, as to get third, the band comes off, clutch goes on.

The drum has the softer spring already, the Neon's are softer, guess Dodge figured it out, lol. I don't have the softer piston spring, maybe I'll have to try that.
