Method for finding 100% accurate Top Dead Center?

I'm installing a new short block and my after market converter has no timing marks. So I really need to find exact TDC so I can accurately mark the torque converter to set the timing.

    Thanks,
    Guy

Mine is a spark plug hallowed out with a pin that goes through. Pin has hash marks on it so you can tell when the piston is dropping.

The pin goes through straight and true so its a much better method than a pieceo of wire, or finger.

If the head is off you can use a piston stop. rotate cw mark the converter at tdc mark. rotate ccw mark converter at tdc mark. halfway between the two marks is TDC. If you use a dial indicator remember the piston rocks at tdc and can throw your readings off quite a bit.

I simply busted the porcelain out of an old plug, then JB welded a bolt in its place that stuck out 1/2" further than the ground strap. Using that and a degree wheel will get you within 1*. I did round off the end of the bolt so there isn't any chance of marring the piston.

The tool is not a stop. Its a spring loaded plunger if you will with a ball end that machined on a brass internal shaft. As the piston moves so does the spring loaded shaft. What you do is zero your indicator near tdc and when the piston reaches the top of its travel zero out the indicator. You now have perfect tdc.
