    Head porting

I took the top end off the motor for the omni and put it in the Daytona last week. I will need to come up with something for the Omni now.

I've got a compressor which will keep up with my die grinder all day.

I need the proper porting bits though. Where should I get the stuff?

Any good tips on how to go about this?

Where can I get my head flowed? How much will that cost? I'm thinking of doing a before and after to test the feasibility of doing my own work in the future. If it sucks there's no reason to do it again.

I cant answer you on the bits and where to buy.....but I have had a head flowed in the past. It cost about 40 bucks. I would just call around to local machine shops and see if they have a bench. Someone in your area should have one. If your works sucks the first time....you know what they say.....try, try and try again. Which is great in theory besides the whole 40 bucks a pop thing....

make sure you get a bit that is meant for aluminum, or else it will just pack up with aluminum and it will be ruined. the most critical area for flow is the area near the valve. focus on smoothing and blending the short side radius and blend the valve seat to the head casting, be carefull about increasing port cross section as it will hurt low end velocity and your car will suffer on the bottom end even thought its boosted. get a high quality 5 angle valve job and get backcut valves. dont polish the intake ports as it will hurt fuel suspension in the airstream. and the fuel will likely stick to the polished port wall. keep the intake ports semi rough with like a 80 grit sanding drum, this will promote fuel suspension in the airstream. if you like polish the exhaust side as the same issues dont exist. there are a couple books out there that touch on head porting. dont go too crazy, start conservative and go from there. good luck.

I figured that would put you out of the game... Same problem for me. 40 dollars in real people money is like (as slasky would say) several hundred "Sean Campbell dollars".

Auto parts store should carry those, we have Princess Auto and as said, you want bits with wide flutes so they don't plug up.

Port match then open up the runner to match as you go down, I like to take a bit off the floor to straighten the shot at the valve but that's a whole other argument, lol. Open up the bowl a bit, 90% of the valve size is max, then a nice 5 angle on the port and the stock angle on the valve with a 30 deg back cut. Again, up for arguments sake but I like to hog out the exhaust port.

For a go no gauge, I used the ratchet end of a 1/2 extension, not entirely 100% accurate but it helped me keep them all close.

I Know that a lot of people can choke on the $ sent on cutting burrs but these bits you will have for a long time and if taken care will last a long time .

Take your time small cuts with the lowest speeds the grinder will give without chattering. and alway draw the bit into the metal with the rotation of the bit.

Here is some(not all) pic of my porting tools

I also recommend bright light if not pure day light.

Believe it or not the home made flap grinder is the most used work horse.
