Re: Rebuild: Turbo Minivan, Part 1

Hopefully pulling the engine out soon and tearing it back down to inspect the damage. Need to tear apart the spare short block. Ran the casting number and found it to be an 86-88 2.2 turbo short block. Will start the teardown here soon. I'm meeting with OhioRob Friday to build my exhaust for the Audi and then I need to build a console mounted gauge pod for it, then I can start.

Anyone know if the factory rod bolts and main bolts are reusable or are they TTY? I'd like to inspect the bearings while its apart and replace if theyre bad, plastigage and double check end gaps, etc.

While its out I really want to try and put the Holset on with a new downpipe.

Also trying to put a 5spd in if I can get someone to buy my Auto stuff or trade.

    Thanks guys.

They are TTY but reusable. I wouldn't reuse the rod bolts and I wouldn't use the 88 T1 rods anyhow, especially if your going to beat on it.

    What Holset?

Oh, right, arent the early T1 rods real thin in the center? I thought it was reaaaal early T1's, like 86 older? Are the main bolts reusable? Do the torque specs change if I resuse both factory rod and main fasteners?

And as of now I'd really like a HY35, it seems to fit my setup best.

This engine, btw, is a temporary so I can drive it this year until I gather the time and money to rebuild the engine. Didnt really want it down for real long like last year while I built it.

Gotcha, so if your not beating on it, then use the T1 rods. Are you keeping it 2.2?

Mains are TTY also but reusable.

HY's are nice, harder to find but suit the 8 valve better. The HE341/351 is also a nice turbo.

85 and older T1 rods are nice and thick. They are thick as T2 rods except they are press in piston pins and they have a little less metal on the rod cap.

89 2.5L T1 rods are the same as T2 rods.

86-88 T1 rods are the lightweight rods.

If your not beating on it/running stupid boost, they will work just fine.

Re: Rebuild: Turbo Minivan, Part 1

Two and a half years later, here's what we've been up to!

    Caught it on fire...

Sold it to my dad (thanks dad!)

I think we've put less than 1,000 miles on it since the "rebuild"

Stole the stock TII Garrett turbo from the woodie van, Derwood. Also added coolant lines back to the turbo.

Added a Turbos Unleashed fuel rail, Aeromotive AFPR and plumbed with -6 AN hose and fittings. Also cleaned up the vacuum lines / vacuum block.

Had a real bad vibration under load. Was able to loosen the mounts and re-center the engine to fix that.

Also did a mini wire tuck on the passenger side inner fender area.

That moves us to today! Tucked away in storage waiting for a fresh start.

I'll let you guys guess what this is going into...

Starter wiring was unshielded. Old dry wiring is like fire wood under the turbo.

We will be there with at least one Turbo Minivan. It better be in the 12 sec range too.

More parts are on their way for the build. Think I'll make a part II thread for this since it's starting all over again...
