What is the finish supposed to be on shelby charger tail lights, the sides and the ridges (the non red part)? It appears to be a matte black on my car. What have you guys used also to restore your tail lights?

I used PPG satin black trim paint. bought a quart of it for all the areas needed. you should be able to get want you need at a automotive paint supply store.
I used an SEM satin black. I don't remember the part number, but TurboDave and Spoolinhard know it.
Also, hit up a paint/body supply store or a well equipped hobby store, and see if they have any 10mm wide masking tape. It beats having to cut regular masking tape up with a razor. I had both of mine masked and ready to paint inside 20 minutes.
Any special primer needed on the plastic?
SEM Trim Black gives a nice matte finish and adheres great to plastic, no primer needed.
As far as prep, I would go over it with a scotchbrite pad, then clean it really well and you should be good.
