or just buy the rod bracket that omni potent makes and sells and keep your rod shifter!
Go with a 523, they are a blast to drive. Just knock out the hole where the automatic transaxle shift cable would have gone through and use the rubber seal from an automatic car shifter cable to cover the hole in the firewall. The cable shifter in my Laser is precise and has very low friction. A bit of work will need to be done to secure the new style shifter to the floor without sitting up too high. If it is all done correctly it will be difficult to tell that it has been swapped without looking under the car or popping the hood.
