    2.2 interchangeability with the 2.4

A novice question I know, but...

is the bell housing of the early 2.2/ 2.5 engines the same as the later 2.0/ 2.4 engines so that transmissions will interchange between the two? All else aside, will they bolt up correctly?

No they are not the same, but they are close enough that some have gotten 2.4's to work on older manual transmissions by adding some bosses to the belhousings.

For automatics, you can use a Neon 3-speed auto trans, which internally is nearly identical to the 2.2/2.5 trannies, if not beefier.

    He's on the right track...

The 2.2 trans will bolt up to the 2.4 block with the exception of the front bolt.

The 2.4 trans has the starter housing on the front which would create intereference with the starter/block on a 2.2

    As in valve interference?

Both 2.2L and 2.5L are clearance engines
2.0L is interference, valve to piston
2.4L is interference with valve to valve

Maybe you should ask this question in some place other than the trans section

Did a quick search, seems both can be, but 2.2 is for some, 2.5 is 50/50. Engine setup plays a huge roll.

Re: 2.2 interchangeability with the 2.4

Adding the extra bellhousing bung and getting the starter to fit on the newer 2.4 blocks is the biggest challenge.
