    mixing and matching...

    would i be able to ...take the rods and pistons from a '89 2.2 and attach them to an '89 2.5 block and crank...this will work no???

    You could do it, but it won't work. You need 2.5 pistons. The rods are common to both motors, but the crank and pistons are 2.2 or 2.5 specific.

    Yes, if you use the 2.2 crank,

    But yeah, as Cordes said, no, the pistons will stick out up out of the bores.

    Super duper high compression. Take out the spark plugs and make it a diesel.

    ....is he saying, if i used the '89 2.5 cb crank in my '89 2.2 cb, i'd have to use the 2.5 pistons??? or am i mis-reading his reply???

    Yes you need to use 2.5 pistons.

    Yes, the crank goes with the pistons. Also, it's not a 2.2 common block. It is a common block for the 2.2s and 2.5s. The block and rods are common between the two. It's the pistons and crank which must be matched to the size of the displacement.
