How low is too low regarding vacuum

My 86 shelby charger has about 6000 km's on its new rebuild.
Car is a 2.2 fully converted to TII, new mahle cast pistons, moly rings fully rebuilt block, new slider cam and rebuild head etc.

At idle my vacuum is around 11.... I have also noticed the PCV valve is making a ton of noise at idle (I have tried two brand new valves one mopar and another part store brand.)

What should I be checking? Car pulls very hard still, not using oil, and was broken in with regular oil.

It must be a leak in the line to the gauge, a bad gauge, or your cam timing must be way off.

Re: How low is too low regarding vacuum

Incorrect idle speed,- reset throttle stop screw.
Incorrect ignition timing, -reset to 12* with coolant sensor unplugged.
Restricted exhaust, -only if the power is low as well.
Restricted inlet, - filthy air filter or kinked inlet/charge pipes.
Incorrect cam timing,- reset to spec, or possibly a missmatch in slider cam/cam sproket.
Low valve lift due to worn cam lobes.
    Worn or broken valve springs.
    Worn or broken lifters.

That's about all I can thing of that could cause low vacuum. Listed in order of most likely at the top.

Re: How low is too low regarding vacuum

Checked for vacuum leaks couldn't find any, the car still chugs/surges a bit at idle

We did a compression test and got 118psi across all 4 cylinders. Cylinder 3 was slightly less (about 115)

I pulled the valve cover and the cam looks ok as well.

There always has been some smoke coming from somewhere underneath the intake...

Spray some carb spray or starting fluid ( use the little straw that comes with them for pinpoint accuracy, and to minimize any fire hazard others are sure to say are imminent ) around the injectors where they go into the intake, sometimes those o-rings go bad and leak air. Is it throwing any codes? Does it run rich? The compression numbers are decent. What intake do you have?

TII Two piece intake, TII intercooler. Now the car has a turbo xs bov, i'm wondering if its leaking...

I'm going to see if I can tighten up the intake manifold bolts too

The BOV won't make any difference in vacuum, as it is in front of the TB. Check the TB gasket, my 2-piece had the bottom hole stripped and let it leak behind the TB. Helicoiled it and all was good. The manifold-to-head gasket rarely ever leaks.

Ill prob try to check the cam timing tommorow, and poke around again to try to find some leaks.

I did try another vacuum gauge and they are both reading the same.

Steve, do you remember what cam and cam gear you used? Is that a 782 head or g-head?

Its an 86 782 swirl head (from my 86 Turbo Z), its a slider cam that was apparently new(got the head done at Joe's Machine shop in the city many many years ago) And its the original slider cam gear.

Re: How low is too low regarding vacuum

I like to see 17-18 inches of vacuum at hot idle. I wonder about your 2 piece intake leaking?

Do the easy stuff 1st, check ignition timing and cam timing. If that doesn't solve it, start looking at the other stuff.

Then your compression is deff a little low.

Re: How low is too low regarding vacuum

Compression is a bit low but not enough for 11" at idle.

If the cam is unknown, could be a weird grind but obviously check basics first.

Re: How low is too low regarding vacuum

It was "supposed to be a new stock slider cam"

I was thinking of re-checking the timing tonight.

Would an 89 roller cam work on this engine? (or would I have to switch all the pulleys over to the 89 round tooth style?)
