    ARP head studs?

last time i bought ARP head bolts for the 2.2 they were too long. i decided i am going to use studs this time. well looking in the ARP book, it shows them for the 2.2 but non turbo. would that really be bad to use on a high boost turbo 2.2? i want something good and i wanted to go with studs. anyone know the part number? or another company who makes good ones?

    thanks

    Re: ARP head studs?

As for the ARP head bolts, you have to use 2 washers on them, it was a design flaw,

The turbo and non turbo are the same.

Do NOT tighten into the block, just snug and torque to 80 ft/lbs or more depending on application, DO NOT torque to yield.

Chase the threads in the block with a tap first then blow the holes out with air, makes them go in and come out easier.

A thread chaser is a better tool to use,

yeah good call mentioning the chaser. i use one every time i pull the head off.

so you say the non turbo and turbo are the same... that's what i thought but it just makes me worry because in the book for the studs it say except turbo.

    Re: ARP head studs?

I have a used set of 2.2/2.5 ARP head studs if you need a set. They aren't a stretch bolt so they never wear out and are as good as new.

My set has an allen socket fitting in each stud so they are easy to remove.

    $75 shipped.

    Re: ARP head studs?

well i can get them fairly cheap through a local shop with no shipping. i just wanted to make sure i'm safe ordering the head studs. they hold up fine to 30+ psi? i will only be running 30 max, but just good re-assurance to know if they would hold up to more

ARP studs can stretch. I have a few that are longer than the others, one snapped in 2.

What did you torque them to?

At the spec of 70ft*lbs they really shouldn't stretch...

    Re: ARP head studs?

you really shouldn't use them more than 3 times. They do "stretch" but only a few thousandths at a time but they metalurgy is changed over time and once they are used too many times they end up like boost geeks

    Re: ARP head studs?

Ever use a bolt stretch gauge on arp rod bolts? They stretch

    http://www.turbo-mopar.com/forums/sh...81&postcount=2

Ive heard the use 3 times and replace from a few engine builders and race teams too. Yea they "can" be used more than that but would you rather spend 110 on a new set or another fix the head when one stretches and you burn a groove in the head.

So what did you think I was kidding about?

    Re: ARP head studs?

We've all used studs tons of times without issues. Sure they stretch a bit but they are designed too. I must have reused mine at least 15 times and still good.

Rod bolts, sure, cylinder head studs, no way unless they won't torque down.

3 times and throw them away, can I have yours please,
