    crank timing gear

Is there supposed to be some sort of alignment device for installing the crank sprocket on the crank snout? I got my block back from the machine shop with no crank sprocket, so I bought one here from Simon (thanks!)...but now I go to install the damn thing and can't exactly figure out how I'm supposed to tell if it's in the right spot?

I see on the sprocket where theres a keyway, but there's no "key" to speak of on the crank snout. There is, however, an indentation on the crank snout. I'm thinking this is where the key would be.

The key is a half-moon type. Same key as used on the camshaft/intermediate shaft...

It seems as though I'm missing the key. Is there any way to remedy this? Or am I up poop creek? Also, the 3 inverted torx screws in the picture are only finger tight. I assume this is wrong also. Does anybody know the torque specs for these? I can't find it in the haynes manual I have. Thanks everyone!

You don't need those screws unless you're running a balance shaft assy and the sproket is on there. I don't see a sprocket.

You just need a spare camshaft key. I think you can get them at the auto parts store. I always keep extras around just in case.

awesome! i have a few extra cams laying around. How the hell do I get the key out of the camshaft? Just put it in a vice and yank on it? Thanks for the advice on the bolts. I don't have the balance shaft assy. Is it safe to just take the bolts out altogether? Or is oil going to come spraying out of the holes? Thanks again! I can't wait to try the cal that I bought from you a few months ago. This project is taking forever!

Take out the bolts, not needed if you have no gear.

Use a screwdriver and pry up on the key, its like a half moon, rock it out, then put it in the crank and tap it in with a hammer.

BE VERY CAREFUL installing the crank gear, put a bit of oil on the snout and use a brass punch to put in on and use the crank bolt well lubed up to finish sucking it up. It is very soft and you can easily damage it and its a very tight fit.

The bolts are behind the seal housing, so, no, oil will NOT come gushing out.

(not taking a jab at ya) By the sounds of it, you seem to be quite "newbie" at engine related stuff. I recommend that you get some guidance while assembling your engine. So... do NOT be afraid to ask lots of questions here, ok? It's really easy to overlook something simple.... simple enough to ruin an engine in a matter of seconds.

With that said: did you block off the one oil supply port to the balance shaft assembly when you removed them? If you don't, oil pressure will piss right out and cause major issues right off the get-go.

Hey, I just noticed that crank snout looks fubared. Is it bell mouthed? Looks like it has a lip at the beginning of it? If so, its junk.

Can't really tell by the low quality of the picture.... I *think* it's ok and just a rust stain ring/mark.

Best way to get out a key is to use the wire cutting pliers (dykes) and grab right ahold of it with the two blades parrallel to the key vs 90 degrees, and lift from one end up, while the other end is down.... if that makes any sense.

I had the machinist block off the balance shaft oil hole. He assembled the short block (for the most part), now I'm just putting accessories on etc. He had the thing for about 2 months, so now I have to try and remember where everything goes so I don't end up with a paper weight! Thanks for the help!

    Re: crank timing gear

I like to put the crank pulley in the oven at 400* for a while. Then I use a welding glove to grab it and put it on the crank. Eliminates any chance of damage to the thrust bearing surface caused by beating on it with a hammer.
