Question Engine mounting WITHOUT the transmission

Can the engine be put in without the transmission? I want to start putting the car together but still have some work to od on the trans. If necessary, I can fab up a brace to bolt from the engine to the drivers side, to hold everything up.

You'll need some way to support it from tilting back into the firewall. I guess you could use some sort of adjustable rod from the bobble strut mount to an ear on the block maybe?

Be better to put them in together though.

I use a piece of small angle iron across the engine bay. Drill a hole in it for a theaded eyebolt, chain goes in eyebolt and other end of chain bolts to the engine. Adjust the height with a nut on the eyebolt. It rests on the radiator support and the firewall. Simple.

I use the flywheel bolts to hold some chain, then attach to the front mount frame bracket and to the rear at the BS mount.

Chrysler had a special tool for us to purchase to do this. I see them in the tool catalogs all the time. Ours had two hooks on either end and crossed from strut tower to tower. It was pretty adjustable.

Took the service manual to a local iron shop, showed them the picture and gave them some dimensions to make up something. Cost me $55 and it worked great.

I'd wait and put them in all together all at once. Doing the clutch in the Omni isn't exactly fun.

Re: Engine mounting WITHOUT the transmission

I plan on it, I just need to free up my engine stand to do my transmission work. That and just to get the engine out of the way for a minute.

    135sohc, got a picture?

Why doesn't my valve cover have exclamation points... So it is a bar between the shock towers, with a vertical piece that bolts to the right side of the engine? To the right of the flywheel, I mean.

You have a lame valvecover, as do I.

You could probably do the same as a temporary use with a some square bar stock and chains. Set it on 2X4 blocks or some rubber cushion of some sort. Do a little scrap engineering.

2x4 front to back with rope works for me.

+1 to this. Just put a 2x4 across the strut towers and hang a chain over it. Use some long bolts to bolt the chain to the block ears.
