regulator on fuel rail - shouldn't fuel be being pumped back to the tank?

Ok, I'm still getting a code 26 - I got a replacement fuel pump (ES7012) for the 1990 Daytona 2.5T - it was not an exact match for the old Bosch unit as it didn't have the pulse regulator on it (won't swap either - banjo fitting on the Bosch and the CarQuest/Airtex unit has the nipple molded into the end). I reinstalled everything and it still won't fire up - fuel fountains out the schrader much more forcefully than before (before it turns out I only had 10 psi - unfortunately I returned the tester to my friend...so no numbers to compare it to.)

I finally yanked the fuel rail/injectors and tried turning it over - I get a little squirt from each injector about every other revolution or so - that seems right yes? It's not a massive spray though....

Lastly, no fuel is coming out of the regulator - I even unscrewed the return line and pulled the vac hose off the regulator. If I've got the 43psi I'm supposed to, shouldn't fuel be returning from the reg?

It'll start with ether, but not stay running.

    Any ideas?

Code 26 isn't fuel pressure, its electrical-

Yes, fuel should come out of the return-

Ok, jumpering power (from a jumper battery) straight to the pump at the tank circulates fuel through the regulator and back to the tank, starts & runs.... ran - now it's dead. I've got to check for fouled plugs, but it ran long enough for me to set the initial timing (12 deg). Now its running like it's on 2 cyls... hence the plug check that's going to be done once I've got shade again!

What would cause a code 26? bad ground? I've got a great ground at the harness/injector rail..... I even re-grounded the FP at the tank!

everything seems to be pointing to a faulty SMEC....

Bad connections at the injectors, bad injectors, bad SMEC.
