    Spark Plugs

What is the best spark plug to use in a basically stock TIII?...the old owner had
autolite AP65 in it which is a platinum plug. Is that bad? I heard you should not use platinum plugs in a forced induction engine. Maybe that explains some of the issues i've been having. I have heard alot about NGKs but which ones are best?

    Heres my setup

3-inch dp and exhaust with cut out
    MBC set to 12 psi
    58mm t/b
    180 degree t-stat
    Walbro 255lph
ARP head studs, and cometic headgasket

I err on the side of caution, and never use any precious metal plugs for any forced induction application.

Yep, one or 2 steps colder help.

You don't have the matching flow setup so its a waste and it could actually hurt.

If you have a stock setup you wont realize any gains with a 58mm TB.
That's what I was advised when I asked around. And it makes sense.
If you're going to go big there you'll need a bigger turbo and more fuel...

    Re: Spark Plugs

I forgot to ask, did you open up the intake hole where the throttle mounts to match the 58mm? If not, you have a major restriction there.

    Re: Spark Plugs

Hey Turbovanman, so I can find NGK Iridiums in only 2 sizes that fit our vehicle. GR4IX is what sites recommend for our vehicle. GR5IX is only one step colder. Reading on a lot of other sites, I see many people with forced induction engines recommending a heat range of 7. Do you know of any colder plugs than the GR5IX?

    Re: Spark Plugs

Sparks jump more easily from/to sharp edges. A regular plug with sharp edges, and a strong ignition, is fine. Over running time heat/sparks melt/erode sharp edges. High combustion pressures can quench/suppress spark. Sharp edges fight that. Low powered ignition can fail to push a spark through/into high combustion pressures, especially when your plug's edges are rounding/rounded. If, you're fighting hi speed misfires and hi boost misfires, then that's where iridium - NOT platinum - comes in. Steel and platinum edges melt at far lower temps than does iridium. Sharp point stays that way - in the face of high temps that defeat other plugs.

I always buy the NGK V-Power GR4 or GR5 plugs for my TI/TII/TIII stuff. Good inexpensive plug for the mild builds I do.

    Re: Spark Plugs

Yeah, the V-Powers are an effective inexpensive plug.
