Thread: Laser XE coming back

    Re: Laser XE coming back

The polishing was not done to make it look good, after all, no one will see it when it is in use. the idea is to make the crank more aero and to lighten it. after it gets shipped to Winberg they will stress relieve it and shot blast it, hollow/rifle drill the crank pins,Nitrite harden, set stroke and index while grinding and polishing journals. and finally balance it.
I also honed the oil holes with a diamond ball hone to remove every possible notch or stress riser. My main focus is longjevity...form follows function.
Almost forgot......I took off 4 lbs.

Damn bro, simply amazing! What do you estimate it will weigh after Winberg gets done with it?

    Re: Laser XE coming back

Because these cranks are made of such a dense alloy, it doesnt take much material removal to add up to measurable weight. Most of the reduction came from sculpting the leading and trailing edges of the counter weights. I also completely removed the balance pads from the outboard #1@#5 crankpins. The rest is just from the grinding and polishing of the lobes between journals.
Crank weighed 42.5lbs stock. I weighed a few and they vary between 41lbs. and 42.5lbs. Rifle drilling the crank pins should net another 1.5lbs IF they can do it, They want to see if they can clear the oil holes first.
I left the most critical areas alone (fillets) I will let the proffesionals micro polish the rolled fillets and journal cheeks.
This started out as the nicest used crank Ive seen, it measured and dial indicated DEAD straight. Thanks ROB!!!!! for keeping me in parts. If not for that I may have gotten out of Turbo Mopes.

Looks great Warren I will be interested to see if they can rifle the pins. I took a crank to be looked at by my machinist and they thought it may weaken it too much. I guess it depends on bore of the rifle though. I hope it balances easily and doesnt need any or much mallory $$$. Superb work as usual.

Thanks Brian. As far as drilling the crank pins, I will let Winberg make the call on that. My first priority is longjevity. They want to cryo it first, then nitrite it. As for mallory metal, it is not used on a 180degree flat plane crank. you should never have to add weight. Theoretically, you could remove all of the counter weights and still be in balance because there are no bobweights involved.(but they need counter weights for stability) These cranks are only balanced end to end.

Agreed on the heavy metal, that is why I used the little if any remark. I had some pics of a 4 cyl crank that had some work done and they added weight to bring stability to the piece. Seems that it was whipping around and hurting the main bearings. If I recall correctly, it was a 4g63 that this was done to.

That Winberg 4 counter weight Mitsu crank looks like it would damn near drop in our engines.

    Re: Laser XE coming back

OMG!! I need to go home to change my pants!! HOLY CRAP!! That is much too pretty to put inside of an engine! Get a lot of good pictures, because hopefully you'll never see it again once you button it up!

BTW, I have a friend who has completely removed the counterweights on some 4-bangers used only for cirlce track. It works. I can't remember if he said he had to replace bearings often or not. I'll have to ask.

This crank is something I want to do at some point as well. For my purposes I'd also have an oil shedding coating applied.
