Rear wheel bearing broke, inner race seized

This weekend my son spun a wheel bearing on the CSXT. It has '89 CS rear vented brakes.

As soon as the car 'felt funny' he pulled over and I went and rescued it.

However, the inner bearing race of the outer wheel bearing is already seized onto the spindle shaft. I'm gong to ATTEMPT to pull the race off without damaging the spindle, but I've seen this before and I no longer have access to a lathe to fix the spindle.

I'm not sure if I have a puller with small enough 'fingers' to grab the bearing race inside the hub. The only other thing I can think to do is pull the caliper so I can pull the entire spindle/hub assebly and TRY to somehow cut the inner race so it releases from the spindle.

    Any advice?

Pull the whole thing apart. If the wheel bearing exploded you should be able to get the hub off without too much trouble. Heat and some strategic hammering may work on the race stuck to the spindle. If not cut a pie slice out of it with a cutoff tool. If I recall though, the races are incredibly hard. You may be at it a while with the cutoff tool.

WORST CASE you have to get the spindle machined somewhere, or go junkyarding to find a replacement. If you go junking make sure to take the old one with you. There might be a difference between ones on drum brake cars vs disc brake. When I put 88 style brakes on my car I had to use the spindle that came with the parts. However, since yours is an 89 and probably has the internal drum for the parking brake the spindle may be the same.

    Good luck!

That's great news. I can "borrow" a spindle out of the storage shed, then!!

DERP! You're right. I had to change the hub, not the spindle. The drum hub was too short and made the rotor sit crooked, grinding on the caliper bracket. I remember now...Thanks for clearing up my mis-information.
