I noticed yesterday I have some rattle noises from the rear. The car is a P-body with the rear axle out of an '89 CS Daytona.
I know the upper shock bolts are notorious for being loose and noisy. After that, are there any common areas to check?

Have you done a rear disc conversion? All my rattles were from the brake pads on the slider rails. A bit of "pad glue" to keep the pad to the caliper and it was more or less solved.
All my rear suspension rattles have been the solid bar inside the "axle" beam.
Oh! I hadn't heard of that one. So, simply weld the bar inside the axle beam? Are the bars supposed to be welded at the ends? Is this an issue with broken welds or is it just that the bar rattles in the middle?
*yes, the car has 4-wheel disc. Originally a non-vented rear disc it now has the vented rears from the '89 CS.
Back to the upper shock mount, I've had several P-bodies rattle there. The others all needed shocks so the noise went away after having shocks installed. One time I tried to fix it myself I ended up breaking an upper shock bolt because the nut was seized. It's been a while, so, the upper shock mount - is it a bolt that is inserted from the front to the back with a nut on the back? Is the nut welded in place?
Do you have KYB shocks in the rear? I have two cars with KYB's and they both rattle when cold.

i had the most annoying rattle in the back of my p-body and i couldnt find it for the life of me. i tried everything. didnt find it until the last week i drove the car... i took off the rear bumper (the actual steel bumper under the cover) and the mounts dont just bolt to the body, they go inside the sub-frame rail. the pieces that went inside, rotted off and were just jumbling around inside the rail. check it out. hope this helps!
If I find the bar loose, is it best to weld only the ends or can I lay some bead inside the "axle" beam?
My CSX-T had the prong break off the inboard brake pad which caused it to rattle. Give it a check
