    Under car restoration

    Greetings,

My P-body has solid floor pans front to back but there is a lot of paint missing underneath and surface rust. I want to take care of this before it gets out of hand.

What is the best method/product(s) for doing this?

I could sandblast, prime, paint but I'm not sure if that is the best course of action. The car is white and whatever I do, I'd sure like to end up white underneath although a factory finish isn't needed.

Its not a stock appearence but I've used the eastwood companies rust encapsulator and extreme chassis black with good results.

if you can spend a few bucks have it soda-blasted. simple clean-up, and will be easier on the panels.

Couldn't I just run soda through my sandblaster?

In googling this, it appears that I cannot. Also, the soda is not reclaimable and is more expensive.

I've sand blasted many a panel and after my first few attempts, they have all turned out good. I think I'll just stock up on some silica and start cleaning it up with sand.

pressure washer works pretty good to take rust off. you might have to hit a few thick layery spots with the sand blaster after but it will take most rust off if its high enough pressure.

you can even feed a little degreaser in with the water feed to clean it in one shot too.

i use rust bullet. works pretty well.

Well, if you don't want to put the car on a rotisserie I would suggest an angle grinder with grinding discs. They'll strip the undercoating and surface rust right off. Then clean the surface and I would go with truck bed liner of Eastwood's chassis paint. Either will be a lot light than the factory undercoating and protect just as well.

This car wasn't factory under coated, just the white paint same as the body color.

A pressure washer will work on the rust? Hmmm... Never tried it. I think the pump is out of my pressure washer anyway.

I don't have a rotisserie or a lift, but I have some three foot tall jack stands. Can't stand under it of course, but plenty of room to work.

Considering the different options for coating, which will be easiest to apply, adhere well, last a long time, and not absorb moisture?

    Rubberized undercoating (yuck!)
    Eastwood Chassis Black
    POR 15
    Roll on bed liner
    Prime and paint per factory.

    Re: Under car restoration

if it has holes in the bottom, a pressure washer will make a BIG mess of the interior though and will cut through areas that the rust is bad.

Rust bullet is your best bet for the first coat against the rust. then prime and paint with regular stuff.

POR 15 is a bastard to get paints to stick too. rust bullet is not. plus it worked on my wifes neon really well, even when left exposed to the NY salt.

Summit sells Rust Bullet Rust Inhibitor Coating and Black Shell. Is there any prep chemicals I will need?

    Re: Under car restoration

www.rustbullet.com sells it on their own website.

get a good degreaser. the underbelly needs to be clean and grease/oil free.

i usually give the areas a quick wipe with acetone or brake cleaner before i coat it.
