How did you ship them? My 555/520 hybrid w/ OBX in a 30 gallon tote was $66.15 going UPS ground w/ $1500 insurance. I do get a discount on UPS from my shipping department at work. Just curious.Originally Posted by Frank

He shipped them ups. I find that fedex is a bit cheaper and more reliable than ups. Not a lot on the money side, maybe $10 or so, but stuff seems to arrive in better condition with fedex.Originally Posted by show-off

Btw, how did that foam do that I put in there? Rather getto approach, but those floaties seemed like it was going to be good.

Worked great, we were laughing when I opened the totes and pulled them out with the stickers still on them. They seemed to do a a good job, so I reused them when I packed them back up yesterday.Originally Posted by Frank
hehehe. i figured you would get a kick out of that. i had been searching for good foam, then i cam across those in Wal-Mart. 1-buck each for long ones... quick cut and wham! LOL. They do compress too much under the tranny, so it requires something better.

willa 555 fit in one of those containers...Anyone know the weight of a 555
It'll fit, but you need to pack it in with a lot of padding. Total weight comes out to about 110lbs for a 555, add a couple more for a quaiffe or obx.Originally Posted by Boogieman142

35gal is the only one that will work.

ok, thanks
Wow. Only cost me around $70 to ship a boxed transmission via Fed Ex. If you have two, I would recommend shipping in two boxes, instead of one. Shipiing is cheaper. Founf that out when shipping wheels and tires, via fed ex. Saved me around. $30
I shipped mine today. Transmission and OBX were shipped in a 42 gallon rubbermaid rolling trash can. With all the packing it weighed 126 pounds and dimensions were 36x24x21. Without my girlfriends Fedex discount, it would have been $110.17 with $2,000 insurance from Wisconsin to Arizona. I got it for half price.
Incase it helps others. . .

How about expanding foam for packing? Spray some foam in the bottom of the container and put a trash bag over it then put the trans in and let it build up around it. Then use another trash bag for the top and put the lid on. Or maybe even spray it into the trash bag and put it in the box. If you do it right you should have a rough mold of the trans and the trans won't be able to move at all...
annnnd if you use the wrong foam, you get a 5ft blob of foam with bits of rubbermaid tote embedded in it rolled to your door

When Chris at TU returned my rebuilt tranny, he shipped it in a cardboard box inside another cardboard box with a layer of 3/4 - 1" expanded styrofoam between the cardboard layers. The transmission was also wrapped with bubble wrap and packing paper. It traveled beautifully from AZ to WI. Much lighter too.
What is the best way to place the transmission in the 35 gal container? Do you remove anything from the transmision besides brackets? I cut a piece of plywood to fit in the bottom of the tote for extra strength and placed the trans in right side up. The bell and diff cover is right up against the sides. It looks like if you remove the part the axle fits into and place it bell side down it would fit a lot better. The only reason I didn't do it that way was I was afraid the diff would be rattling around and get messed up.
Thanks,
Bob

I shipped a 568 from MD to Arizona last month. Did the online quote and it came out to $150 w/fedex or ups. Took it to the store and fedex came out to $215, ups was $165
Shipped via standard ground. Have prices gone up that much ?
