How to remove camshaft gear! Help quick!

I have someone coming over briefly to help me remove my head/manifold/turbo assembly. I just realized I need some special camshaft holder tool to remove the bolt, but I don't have time to get one at the moment. I can get one for reinstallation.

For now, how can I hold the camshaft gear to loosen the bolt? I am going to use an impact gun and hope it doesn't move/damage anything unless I hear back soon. Thanks!

I have about an hour till my friend arrives, and he can stay only 30 minutes...

Ok, forget it - it came right off without the tool. I guess I need the tool to put it back on so I can torque it properly?

Yes, replacing head gasket, but also replacing swingvalve. So it all comes out.

Currently battling the bracket bolt on the bottom of the turbo. That has rusted into one solid mass....

Leave the cam gear on.... no reason at all to remove it.

As for the turbo support bracket.... remove only the bottom bolt at the block and then maybe pry it way an inch from the block so it won't get caught up on anything when pulling the head off.

Don't forget to remove all of your turbo's oil and coolant lines

I just pulled a T-II from my friend's yard yesterday... 1st time in YEARS that I've wrenched on a TM. Ohhh.... the memories

Ended up cutting the bolt head off with a dremel. The rest is still stuck in the bracket - not sure if its ever coming out. I'll try, or get a new bracket.

All those oil and coolant lines were making me crazy. I think I have it all unhooked, will know for sure when my friend gets some time to stop over and help me lift.

    Thanks for the tips guys!

You may seem overwhelmed now.... but it will all make sense in the end.

Just try not to wreck anything, as it will make putting things back together much more difficult and expensive

I always shoved a screwdriver threw one of the holes in the cam sprocket, took the bolt out with a ratchet, then bungeed the cam sprocket with belt still on up to the hood

Re: How to remove camshaft gear! Help quick!

When I used to make adjustable cam gears for Relentless Performance back in 2000 or so, I used to pillage all the 2.2/2.5 cars in my friend's junkyard for their cam gears. I've made and sold nearly 200 over the course of just 3 years, so I got to be pretty good at removing them ;-) I'd have them off usually in about 1 minute's time. Screwdriver to rip open the plastic guard, then 1/2" ratchet on the bolt... and with a quick swipe action, the bolt would be loose. THEN I'd cut the belt *after* and lightly tap the gear off the cam. Voila! But like you said, screwdriver in the hole worked well for me on the one in every 20 that fought me

I actually have a box with about 40 of those suckers sitting in my garage for the next batch that never happened (I became an automotive machinist vs. a real machinist that I was years before)

Yes, I am/was overwhelmed at the time. After a night's sleep, I am feeling a little better about all this. It's just inexperience and setting my expectations too high that this would be 'easy'. It'll get done, it always does.

    Thanks!

When it comes time to pull the head and all. Try and have a couple friends there to help. Since it is your first time have two guys lift the head and some one go around and make sure that everything is unbolted and unplugged. You would hate to rip apart a wire connector or something else and make the jobe even that much harder.

Yes, I am only 90% sure I got everything. You're right, I need a third to watch the situation as we lift it up.

You can drill/cut the nut off of the bracket and just use a nut and bolt. That's what I did on mine.
