    Engine Oil Pan/Oil Pump help

It seems like everything I have read is different.

So from what I understand, there are 2 different oil pans according to the Knowledge Centre, the non Balance Shaft pan and the BS pans.

But no mention of the PRE '89 pans is in there.

Anyway, I have a 1989 commonblock TII pan, deep sump, without balance shafts. Looks like this one:

So if what I understand is correct, then I need THIS oil pump pickup tube:

But this is the one that came with my new Melling pump assembly, which is the pump used for every car (turbo or N/A) that I got about 2 years ago:

According to Turbosunleashed, this is the NON-common block tube, but different from the square ones used in engines with balance shafts. So I am thinking this is the NON-common block pickup tube up until '88, which used a different oil pan as well.

So I can't run this pickup tube in my engine, if I understand properly, and I need to find the commonblock pickup tube for the pan that doesn't use balance shafts, correct?

    Thanks for the help,

    Dan

No, you can't use what you have.

Go to Autozone and buy an oil pickup for a 89 Daytona Shelby 2.2L Turbo manual.

    Problem solved.

    Not exactly.

Apparently nobody carries the pickup, I already tried calling a few places.

Unless you have a part number to help me out that the desk guys don't seem to know about.

Re: Engine Oil Pan/Oil Pump help

The 1st oil pump pickup you listed is correct and so is the first oil pan. FYI, if you have an oil pan without BS's, its NOT a deep sump,

There are 3 oil pans, 89 and newer and 2.5 tall decks use the CB oil pan in BS and non BS flavours and the pre 89 block's use the non BS pan because they never had BS's.

Order for a 89 Omni, they can't mess it up,

TU and FWD also carry the correct oil pump pickup.

Right on, thanks for the help guys. There seemed to be a little confusion on the pickups/pans, and which was for which.

I ended up making it to Pick n Pull today and yanking one out of a '91 Shadow w/ 2.2 N/A, widened out the pickup saucer hole and it should be good to go!

Why did some vehicles come with the extra sump in the bottom while others did not? Any method to the madness?

    Speaking for common block engines.

Balance shaft equipped engine = deeper oil pan.

Non Balance shaft engine = shallow oil pan.

Match the oil pickup to your pan and off you go.

Speaking in terms of the non-common block 2.2 engines, some had the flat bottom, others had the sump. Which vehicles got which and why?

2.5's with the extra stroke are extra buzzy, so to stop customers from complaining about NVH-Noise-Vibration-Harshness, they put BS's in to make everything smooth and quiet. 2.2's don't need them.

L body's only got 2.2's and they don't vibrate like the 2.5's do, so they never got them, and I guess Chrysler figured why bother when they killed the car, what, in 1990?

As for the others, again, I guess Chrysler had its reason's for some TII"s and the TIII's having them.

Re: Engine Oil Pan/Oil Pump help

Well case in point, my '87 Omni with the 2.2 has a flat bottom pan, whereas the '88 Lebaron that I'm yanking the engine from (which is also a 2.2), has the 'hump' or sump in it as shown in the beginning of this thread. Why did they use different pans?
