    Need Exhaust Suggestion

I want to upgrade the exhaust on the CSX, but I want it to be quiet. The exhaust on there now is basically stock, but no cat (none required on Historic plated cars ) and a dynamax(?) round muffler. I want to go to at least a 2.5" with a Magnaflow. The car is near stock with bigger injectors, a 3-bar, a cal, and 14psi.

I want no drone. I am scared of 3" because I am afraid spool up will occur way sooner which makes driving I-95 at 75mph (rather common) a complete annoyance because I just touch the throttle beyond cruise and I have 8psi.

    Thoughts?

    Re: Need Exhaust Suggestion

I say full 3", no cat, Magnaflow muffler... and a 2 stage boost control that would allow direct manifold pressure to the wastegate for highway cruising for slow or limited spoolup.

3" w/o cat. Though that may give you drone.

My 3" w/ cat and glasspack isn't bad at all in the Daytona. You could always ad a resonator in place the cat down the road if needed.

I thought cats were required on any car produced with them (Federal law)?
Anyhow, I don't like smelling a catless exhaust anymore, so I'd keep the cat.

    Re: Need Exhaust Suggestion

Maybe I'm getting old, but I have yet to be in a car with a 3" exhaust that was not loud or didn't drone at some rpm. For a driver, I'd got 2.5" at the most.

The other side of it that I see is that with a stock turbo car, particularly one with a stock intercooler, you're not going to see any significant gains going all the way to 3".

i found that putting the muffler "race magnum" behind were the cat would be. before the bend it gets rid of noise and drone and it is 3 inch with no cat

    Quit being a wuss!... j/k

This brings me to a thought...

Our mufflers sitting right beside the spare tire well is bound to make alot of noise. The sound waves beat that spare tire well like a drum!...and that has to create quite a bit of noise in the cabin.

Put a 2.5 system on it. Plenty of flow for what you are looking for and much quieter/fits better.

    Re: Need Exhaust Suggestion

After my numerous threads about this, use your own advice, 2.5 inch, large body Walker Supercat and a oval muffler. Don't use a cheap Magnaflow or Catco large body as they will last a year, if your lucky. Use Walker #15146. The best cat you can buy is Walker #15067.

    Re: Need Exhaust Suggestion

3" DP, 3" electric cutout in pace of the cat, then 2.5" would be ideal for having what you want when you want it. 2 stage boost controller would be really good too, that's what i'm going to do with my car. have the WG hooked directly to the manifold for economy mode, then a g-valve for performance mode

    Re: Need Exhaust Suggestion

I think I will probably go 2.5" with Magnaflow... I just need to find a 2.5" swingvalve. If the drone is bad, then I will probably do some raps and use some dynamat which is already in the works for the motor mounts I installed. If the drone is bad, then I will use some 1" pipe and add a little bypass pipe to change the harmonics.

    Pat,
Did you ever remove the swingvalve on this car? I am wondering if I will ever have any luck removing the swingvalve bolts without removing the turbo.

    Re: Need Exhaust Suggestion

I don't have any experience as of yet, but I'm planning on running a full 2.5", a louvered core glasspack and a magnaflow at the bumper.

Each muffler will have a different effect on sound, due to the different types, and different locations. I'm hoping the car won't be too much louder than stock.

Ah yes, you have to love Marylands historic laws. How often do you drive your car?

No, I didn't. There was very little rust on the turbo when I had the drivetrain out of the car but I'd be careful messing with those bolts unless you have the time to start pulling broken studs and retapping holes.

How many miles on her these days?

2nd that. I just tried pulling the swingvalve off of my 49k mile GLHS. Bolts looked great and 3 of them came out easy. 2 broke. One of those came out with vise grips but the last one is pretty much welded in there. Now I have to get the housing off and take it to a machine shop as I'm worried the housing might not be flat after all of my bolt removal abuse. Probably going to break some more doing that.

Don't touch those bolts unless you don't need to drive the car for a while. Good chance it will turn in to a project.

And the police have no issues with it? Sounds great to me!

I've been eyeballing historic tags for my SC.

When I get the car together, I might have to meet up with you, and some of the other guys that are relatively local.
