    I-shaft bearing tool

I was replacing my I-shaft seal and I pulled the shaft out to check the bearings. The front bearing looked great wear wise but had big chunks falling off of it. There was no scoring or anything. The belt was a little tight when I got it too.

Well I ordered the bearings now I need the tool. What does everyone use?

by the time im done I will have a rebuilt engine lol.

One more thing is my front main seal pushed in by hand. Im not sure if maybe they were designed like that but I used anerobic sealer on it

Ouch. Chunks falling off? or voids where it looked like no material ever was? Pics?

I use a 5/16 bolt with different sized washers to press it in. No special tool needed. Just make sure the oil holes line up.

    Re: I-shaft bearing tool

the bearing looked perfect with no scrapes or scratches but there were pieces falling off of it like it had a manufacturing defect. If you touch the surface a big chunk of bearing material will just fall right off the backing. The belt was a touch too tight when I got it but with the way the bearing looks with no damage other than the chunks I dont think thats it. I am also throwing new bearings in the whole thing while I am at it along with new seals and stuff too. This all started with a bad flexplate lol

Does it look like large flat pitting? Just curious what year and engine? I have only really seen issues on a few T-III's

    Re: I-shaft bearing tool

its a 1990 shadow manufactured in 89. All the bearings in the motor say 89 on them. Its a CB 2.5 T1.

To me it doesent look like pitting It looks more like pieces of shattered glass falling off in chunks. I need to remember my camera so I can get pics of it and my turbo.

I have some pictures. crappy camera but they are pics. I looked closer and the I-shaft did hit the bearing from the belt being overtight

yep, I've seen this on the last 2 engines. I figured it was normal for these engines. Especially, over tightened timing belts.

Jason, this is indeed common with 8v engines... in high mileage situations.

Some of the JY T-I motors I've bought and stripped down had this issue. It never posed a problem as there was still 3/4ths of the bearing surface area left.

It's more like "flaking" of the babbit as I think it get kinda hard with age and flakes.

I certainly would change them, though.
