    I bought an electric car

Sort of on impulse. I dont know much about it yet, except that it doesnt have batteries and it DOES have a 52hp motor, controller, wiring, etc, and other than batteries is a complete converted vehicle.

I belong to some fuel economy forums since I bought a 55 hp Geo 3 banger nearly 2 years ago (don't laugh - I get 50-57 mpg and won $$$ bracket racing it) that have useful info and links about electrics....if you need help their members are as good as ours!!! Here you go:

Re: I bought an electric car

Looks like a neat project! I'd like to build one that uses a turbine to run a generator, kinda like a diesel locomotive. I'd just keep some batteries so I could do regenerative braking and save that normally wasted energy....

At any rate, good luck and keep us informed!

PS Maybe add some "cheap" solar panels from Harbor Freight to charge while you aren't driving?...

nice looks like a sweet project. whats your plan for batts? Lead acid nickel metal or the uber awesome a123 batts? Looks like it will make an awesome around town parts getter probably kick some azz at the same time. You need to hook it up with some solar and whatnot and get that thing as efficient as possible. put like 50 psi in the tires and see how far you can go Lower it too along with smooth hubcaps and an airdam

Re: I bought an electric car

i need an electric vehicles seeing as i have a 5 mile commute that takes 25 minutes due to the wait at the security gate (i work on a navy base). i waste a lot of gas sitting in traffic. a guy had a saturn turned electric vehicle that he'd built.....at the bonny eagle car show last spring (biggest car show in maine). it had 5 batteries in the front and 6 more in the rear with special hd rear springs. guy used 3rd gear to start (5spd) 'cause it had so much torque. with a 40 mile range i'd only have to charge it twice a week. the underhood wiring was all done up fancy and it had some clear plexi too. it was the pimp my ride of the electric car world under hood, but looked stock on the outside. pretty slick. i have the photos.

Solar is a waste of money on a car. Not enough surface area to gather enough energy to do any good.

I disagree, unless you are talking about powering the car itself, that's a really tough one. But supplementing the "regular" charging either with regenerative brakes or solar (especially if there is a lot of "down time") just adds to the "fuel" efficiency, assuming you can do it at a reasonable cost... Plus, it just cool!

You guys are getting me worked up.. I need to go take some motor pictures and all that to post up.

Right now the preliminary plan is to get my hands on 3 used Prius battery packs.

Haha you can always put a windmill towering over the tunk and have it spin when your going down the highway to make a little power =P

well as long as we're talking crazy, maybe i could regain some wasted energy by putting some kind of induction generating thingies in the struts and shocks, like those emergency flashlights you charge up by shaking them back and forth

Someone (IIRC it was MIT students) devised such a setup already.

Congrats man! Thats awesome. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time, but lack the time, funds, etc. I was talking to my dad the other day and he is trying to get on the waiting list for the new Nissan Leaf electric car. Wont be long before we are seeing more and more of these on the road.
