Car surges, fan relay clicking???

Car is 87 T2 daytona 2.2

When you fist start the car the fan turns on (even when car is completely cold) and the relay clicks really fast and kinda loud consistently, and when you drive the car completely randomly the car will surge like it lost power for a split second (tack will completely drop to 0 and come right back up when this happens).

If I unplug the connector for the fan from the relay I can drive the car forever without any problems.

Ive tried replacing relay, wiring new connector to relay, and coolant temp sensor. Problem still there.

It cant be the fan because If you unplug the fan from end of harness the relay still freaks out.

I'm out of ideas...


And I've checked all grounds already

Sounds like what happens when you are running the A/C or Defroster. Other than the tack issue.
Does the car have A/C?
Also is the alternator in good working order puting out 14+ volts at idle?

The car does have a/c but there's no belt on the compressor. The button is turned off for it also.

We were assuming that one connector on the relay is for the fan, the other for a/c? Unplugging one of them stops the fan from working and stops the relay from freaking out, the other doesn't have any effect on the problem.

Unplugging the coolant temp sensor also stops it, but also puts the car in limp mode.
