    Exclamation MLS headgasket leaks

I built my common-block 2.2L engine about 3 years ago. The block was decked and the head resurfaced to the proper finish to use a Cometic multi-layered steel head gasket. It was assembled with ARP head studs to 71 ft/lbs torque. I began to notice a coolant smell this summer, but no external leak. Eventually the temp gauge started to fluctuate and the coolant was low in the radiator. I did cylinder leakage and got coolant running out of the radiator on ALL 4 cylinders 8-12% leakage. I did not put any sealant on the gasket. I am shocked that this gasket is leaking already, anyone used MLS gaskets and run into problems?

I believe your supposed to retorque the head studs after completing the first heat/cool cycle ? that or something along those lines iirc.

Yes, they leak, you have to use sealer on them. I really don't like using them, the MP gaskets work just fine.

70 ft/lbs is a bit low, 80 min, 100 if your running high boost.

Had the same problem. I now run a MP gasket on a O-ringed block. I ran it with no O-rings before @30 psi and it held but never pushed it over that or used the nitrous on that setup.

Use the right torque specs for your HP requirements before you condemn the gaskets but Cometics are a crappy product in general. Only a good choice for people who have limited options.
