    SST27SF512 Chip Erase

    Hey guys

I am trying to do my first program. My first hiccup is trying to erase the old program from my SST27SF512. The Willem Eprom PCB5.0C software is telling me the chip is good, but when I try to erase it goes form 0 - 74 % then starts over (about 20 times). After a while it tells me chip erase false. It seems to be pointing to my jumper location. According to the diagram it appears my jumpers are in the correct location.

Has anyone run into this problem? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Nate

Triple check jumpers, if ok, you might have a bad chip or the eraser took a dump. Did you reload the program?

    Re: SST27SF512 Chip Erase

For the 27SF512's, there's a jumper that has to be set to erase, then removed to burn. Something about the erase voltage being higher than the burn voltage. On mine, there's a row of jumpers just to the right of the ZIF socket; it's the uppermost jumper.

    Re: SST27SF512 Chip Erase

Well, I found the manual on the cd and decided to read it...lol I need one more jumper than was offered with the kit. Not having the jumper needed I reached for the closest screwdriver and jumped the pins out. So I got the chip to erase and then was able to verify it was indeed empty.
I loaded my program and was able to program the eprom successfully (so it says). I was able to verify the chip was then "Not Empty". I was doing back flips in the house (imagine that) and proceeded to install the chip in the car.... no start.

What could I be overlooking... I have also installed my new +40's and the (non-GM) 3 bar map which I am sort of assuming is the correct pin-out.. Could the map be the problem or do you think it is still the chip?

    Re: SST27SF512 Chip Erase

You're using a 64k chip with a 32k program and you forgot to offset it by 32k (0x8000). So, your file is in the un-used portion of the chip where the processor can't get to it.

You can simply re-burn it with the correct offset and it should work. You don't need to erase it again since you will be writing to the empty part of the chip anyway...

Alright, would I change that in the "offset (hex)" box? Set it to 8000? it is at 00000 now.

he is using a LM... its C000.

type C000 in the offset box (that says 0000 right now) and reburn. it should start then.

Success!! Thanks for your help, guys. I started the boost at around 16lbs and ran 11.1 - 10.6 afr. Still having a problem data logging my wide band.

naaaaaate.... (drawn out voice with the pitch slightly raising at the end to convey that you are in trouble) you were supposed to start out as low as possible and tune the pumping efficiency table like we talked.

glad that you got it working though. did the cel come on at any time?

lol, no it didn't.. It ran really good. The prog was set to 16lbs but it only ran up to 14.xx on the gauge.

    Re: SST27SF512 Chip Erase

oh ok. i wonder why you got lower boost... i have the program set for 20psi. i wonder if you still have some boost leaks.

you might want to turn antilag off (decheck the box in the first configuration table) and reburn. if the boost is set for 20 and you are running 14, its going to be pulling all kinds of timing.

then put the hose directly from the turbo to the wastegate and go out there and dial in the pumpingefficiency.

    Re: SST27SF512 Chip Erase

No no I lowered the boost down to 16psi and it ran 14.??. My boost line (to the gauge) might have a crimp in it.

    Re: SST27SF512 Chip Erase

I'm trying to burn a program and all of a sudden I am getting an error "Error 0x0000000 Chip = 0X00 Buffer = 0xA1" I'm thinking my burner is shot because it does seem to erase anymore.

    Re: SST27SF512 Chip Erase

Here are the instructions for burning and erasing that chip. Sometimes you will need to perform the erase procedure multiple times for certain chips to actually erase.

    To erase, you need:
    1. remove the safty jumper
    2. select the special chip LED to the position W27C
    3. set the DIP switch 3,5,7,8,9 on and 1,2.4,6,10,11,12 off.
    4. then click erase button.

Once you finished the erase, you can move to write procedure as bellow:

    1. close back the safety jumper.(This will set all LED to default position)
    2. set the DIP switch 3,5,7,8,9 on and 1,2.4,6,10,11,12 off. (same as erase)
    3. load the cal into buffer.
4 do a blank check to confirm the chip been erased and it's blank.
    5. Adjust the offset to C000 This allows the chip to work even though it is much larger than the file you will be loading. There are a couple of other ways to make this work, but this has not failed me yet.
    6. click on write button to write.

I would add that I don't have any of the jumper deals any longer. IIRC the only thing the jumper which you normally remove for the erase procedure does is to prevent it from accidentally switching modes while working.

    Re: SST27SF512 Chip Erase

check the parallel port settings. if they changed, it wont erase. mine is set to EPP and works all the time.

also, connect the burner. turn the laptop off and let it reboot with the burner attached.

    Re: SST27SF512 Chip Erase

Alright I'll try it. my guess is something is shorted in the Willem. It tells me the "chip read is ok" even though there is no chip in the socket... It also tries to erase the chip with no chip AND the jumper missing from the pins. The red LED "LED3" does not turn on anymore. I don't think this is a real WIllem Eprom Burner, rather a Chinese knockoff... Lol

It comes up with a crazy message even when you erase it properly.

    Re: SST27SF512 Chip Erase

i think all of the newer willem's are chinese knockoffs.

mine did that thing too with the red led not coming on. i just had to change the settings.

i think i had to set it to EPP printer port in the BIOS and i turned USB legacy support on. i use an older compaq evo N600c laptop.

i did both changes together (like a simon ) so i cant tell if one or the other fixed my issue but it works now.
