    Re: April Grassroots Motorsports

And as far as tuning the nitrous, calling it tuning is a bit of a stretch. The car ran terribly at the drags. In the end, when we couldn't figure out how to fix it and the clock was ticking to turn in my timeslips, we threw a bunch of spray at it to get to the 11's. On the spray, it was a dog...and I mean a dog till 6k, then screamed till 7k. Then I'd shift, and it was slow as hell again. For about 1k rpm, it was faster than it's ever been, but the rest of the time I felt like I was driving a Kia.

Here's what the "tuning" conversation went like between me and Cliff Sebring:

Me: "This thing is running like --- and I can't figure out why. I'm running out of time!"

    Cliff: "Bigger jets."

Me: "But Cliff, this old bottom end is going to scatter. I'd rather get it to run right first. She has deep 11's in it without spray if it's working right."

    Cliff: "Bigger jets."

Me: "I don't think we should."

Cliff: "Well, if you weren't going to use them, why'd you bring them?!?!?!?"

    Me: "OK."

Ha! My mother may be the only person that still calls me Patrick!

I thought it was cam timing, but checked out fine. When I got home, I found a dead o2 sensor and a fuel pump that was making some funny noises. Replaced those and it all of a sudden made power throughout the rpm range again and immediately went 11.02 @ 125 on boost and 10.97 @ 128 hitting a 35 shot in 4th.

The GRM 11.7 @ 127 pass was on something like a 150 shot from 1st gear on. Driving it was what I imagine it's like to drive a dyno queen Supra. Slow, slow, slow, slow, REALLY FAST, shift, slow, slow, slow, slow, REALLY FAST, shift..etc.

Im still trying to figure out what that means for my car, but im drawing a blank!!

    Here's mine:

Im such a total drag racing n00b. 14.5 in this car. Lol @ me.

Hopefully if i take it back itll be in the 12.9-13.2 region with little change (other than slicks), or maybe 13.5 if its 100 degrees again

Or maybe ill actually make it faster between now and then.

Dont push the red button. You hear me?

Sure. Plus $100/hour for the unbelievable amount of labor I put into it to be able to build a car that can autocross and be competitive with the Hondas and the Miatas, run 11's (now 10's) and stand up to a judged car show for a $2000 outlay. I'll tally it up for you and get you a number.

Buying parts and assembling a car is easy. Building something from nothing is what separates the men from the boys. Gathering parts from numerous wrecks, parts cars, always being on the lookout for smoking package deals or wreck deals, looking at trash and figuring out how you can build a piece you need to reduce budget or make the car faster is not.

For example, my car has a ton of pieces I fabricated out of throw away stuff or junk, such as a big --- 3" swingvalve/turbo outlet, downpipe, intercooler with home made end tanks fabricated from an aluminum truck door, home made baffled trap door/screened oil pan made from scrap metal and door hinges, shortened tubular panhard bar made from yard sale ladder racks, an adjustable rear sway bar made from a hand truck we were throwing away at work, end linked front sway bar using Nissan Sentra end links and a non stock sway bar, a 3 point strut tower brace built from hand truck tubing, body work and paint done myself, etc. I'm sure there's more, but I think you get the point.

I can't speak for others, nor will I try, but my car and my budget is honest to a fault. Down to the zip ties. For me, that's what counts. But, I'm sure you weren't questioning me, right Bill?
