Recomend me a tool for removing rear shock.

So Im doing the suspension on my Daytona. Went to remove the rear shocks, and the damn nut is spinning on the back side.

I cant get wrench on the nut, and I managed to get a ratchet up in there, but the thread are too far through, and the socket wont go over the nut. Not enough space to get a deep well in.

Even tried shocking it with a 1/2" impact. No luck.

My next thought is to get some crows-foot attachments. Its about the only tool I DONT have.

Anybody else have this problem? Maybe those plates on the wheel well are access points? Its late, and I dont feel like removing stuff that will do me no good.

I use an offset closed end craftsman wrench on that end and a socket on the other. PB blaster or some sort of rust penetrant is gonna be your friend.

mine did the same thing, had to take a torch to it which kinda sucks cause that metal is thin there...when i worked at firestone i had a guy do it and he ended up burning a hole threw it...had to weld a big washer to it....needless to say, it was a pain in the a$$.

That was my next solution. I already had to cut off two of the front struts studs.

try a short socket on a breaker bar? maybe dont pop it all the way down on the breaker bar so the stud isnt to long

I've had to grind flat spots on the shaft to get a wrench on and hold in the past...good luck.

Re: Recomend me a tool for removing rear shock.

I had to use a sawzall or torch and cut the bolt off. I cut on the inside of flanges, shock side so as not to damage the perches, took forever cutting,

I use the angle grinder with a cut off wheel cut the shock off and then cut the bolt. The smell and smoke of burning rubber will linger for a while, but it just makes think of the water box at the drag strip.
I have had luck with the breaker bar and socket as stated above but in MI they are usually so rusted I end up cutting them. I have change about 7 or 8 sets of shocks on these cars and have had maybe 2 come apart easy the rest I cut.

I used a 3/8 drive standard depth socket and a 1 inch extension. That combination was still shorter than a regular deep socket. The socket only engadged the nut about 1/2 way but that was enough to hold it.

Use anti-seize on the new bolts.

Well good. Im not the only one with this problem. I just wondered if maybe the plates came off in the wheel well, and there was easy acess, but its looks quicker just to cut the damn shock off.

And use plenty of anti seize on the new bolt to ensure you'll never need to remove it again.

I was lucky and mine came off easily enough when I replaced my rear shocks. An offset box end wrench was what I had to use.

Pb Blaster sprayed on it about once every hour will work wonders. If you need it sooner, buy a red wrench.

I usually use my tig in place of a torch. I just pull the computer out before hand. This will be getting the cut off wheel treatment though. Back to work on it friday.

Hmmm, not sure how good that would work with a mig since you have to lay a bead.

With a tig, you can get the bolt red hot, white hot, or even melt it completely off if you want.

Ydon't have to lay beads to make it work.

I isn't as pretty at a tig setup, but it can be done....mainly getting the nut hot enough to help it bust up some of rust. PbBlaster after heating it works quite good with it.

Yeah, Im sure it helps...I just cant image welding something in order to break it loose. Its just kinda ironic, hehe.
