why is my hybrid trans not shifting?

A friend and I built a 555/520 hybrid trans with obx. Neither of us had any previous experience doing this, we followed the how to in the knowledge center. OBX is properly shimmed I do know that much. It is fully installed in the car, though I have not yet put fluid in it. It will go into two gears, thats it. It is so funny that I am not even shure wich gears they are. I took the shifter cables off and shift manually at the trans, still no go. I took the top plate off the trans to see if all the gears were lined up, they were. No idea, I have never done this before. I am afraid I am going to have to tear it back out to fix something I have no knowledge about. Any ideas?

By not being able to go into gears, you mean the shift lever wont go in and out or swing side to side at all? unbolt it and make sure its not misaligned or the shift forks are jammed up. Sometimes when putting it together it is hard to align everything.

shift lever goes in and out, not side to side. Unbolt what? I already have the shift lever/cover off. Everything is lined up.

Does the shifter go side to side when the cover is not bolted onto the top of the trans? Or only not when it is bolted on? Do the shift forks slide freely side to side? You can usually slide them back and forth with a flat blade screwdriver.

It can be easy to bolt the cover on there and have the lever in the wrong spot.

All gears seem to go back and forth freely, although they feel different. the shifter moves freely when not bolted on also. When I pulled the shifter off it appeared that everything was lined up WTF?

Make sure the reverse lever is in the the slot on the reverse gear. If you installed the gear and the lever was under the slot it will not pull the reverse gear back down and the tranny won't shift.

Yes, always shift it manually before putting the cover back on or installing it in the car.

The 3 shift fork levers should all line in the center of the shift area, if so, try to move each one back and forth, if so, then its a shifter problem or the reverse as they've said.
