You'll need the specs of the LS1 rod to compare BUT most V8 rods are offset due to them sharing the same crank pin.

True, but they could be milled to be "on center", of course, that operation may just tip the cost scale to the 2.4's favor...

The problem with that is would that make the big end narrower than the journal?

But also what is the LS1's rod thickness at the big end before milling? They might be thinner than our rods already.

4G64 engines, 93-96 has a rod shaft size of 1.771"

Makes no sense, but all the manufacturers arent measuring actual ID of journal, but going off shaft diameter. Learn something new every day......

Depends on the rod and journal. For example, you can take early, small journal rods from a small block Chevy and "even them out" and use them in the 60* 2.8-3.4L V6. So, I guess you'd need to start with a rod that was "too wide" by the amount of off-set, otherwise you'd have the rod off-center of the piston and crank journal...

Lots of things are possible, but they may not be practical for everyone... Would be very cool if we could use common V8 stuff with little modification and reap the benefits of their volume and development!

What exactly does the 4G64 engine have to do w/ this?

    Re: ls1 rods in a 2.4

Found this on Stratusphere (for an NA 2.4 but journal sizes should be the same):

    Cylinders: 4
    Bore: 87.5 mm (3.445")
    Stroke: 101 mm (3.976")
    Compression: 9.4:1
    Firing Order: 1-3-4-2
Displacement: 2.4 Liters (148 Cubic Inches)
    Piston Pin Diameter: 22 mm
    Piston Weight: 332-346 grams
    Piston Length: 60.30 mm
    Main Journal Diameter: 60 mm
    Rod Journal Diameter: 50 mm
    Intake Valve Size: 34.8 mm
    Exhaust Valve Size: 30.5 mm
Piston Pin is offset 1mm towards the thrust side of the piston.

That's actually all you can get from the Service Manual about the engine.

    Other things assumed:
    Rod Length: 151 mm
    Block Height: 237.8 mm
    (Pulled from Allpar.com)
    Found this on LS1Tech:

    CONNECTING ROD:
    Bearing Bore Dia.: 56.505-56.525mm / 2.224-2.225"
    Bearing Bore O-o-R (P): 0.004mm / 0.00015"
    Bearing Bore O-o-R (SL): 0.008mm / 0.0003"
    Bearing Clearance (P): 0.015-0.063mm / 0.0006-0.00248"
    Bearing Clearance (SL): 0.015-0.076mm/0.0006-0.003"
    Bearing Width: 24mm / 0.9449"
    Side Clearance: 0.11-0.51mm / 0.00433-0.02"
    Center to Center: 154.89mm / 6.098"
    Piston Pin Bore Dia.: 23.97mm / 0.9436"
    Piston Pin Boss Width: 24mm / 0.9449"
    Piston Pin Press Interference:0.020-0.043mm / 0.0008-0.0017"
    Rod Bolts: M9 x 1" (replace with ARP/Katech if > 450HP)
    Doesn't look like they'll work.

    Re: ls1 rods in a 2.4

    Length is close enough, really.

As for width, they list the bearing width so I'll go measure a stock rod bearing in a bit. As for the rods, maybe you can use .040" oversize or ? rod bearings-haven't done the math yet.

    Re: ls1 rods in a 2.4

I just built a long rod motor ( block was a 1988 2.5 tall deck)( Crank was a 2.0 imsa crank) (carrillo rods small journal sbc )( 2.2 trw pistons )

Our rods are wider than most carrillo rods u find on ebay. I bought 5 carrillo rods on ebay for $100.00(6.3 long, small journal sbc size. .930 small end). These rods are beautifull!!!. Three problems arise (1) Carrillo rods are to thin on the big end side (2) our crank journals are to big (3) .930 small end size

I killed the first rod by tig welding the big end wider. Blued the steel and got to much weld on one spot. Next four I mig welded the side(Carefull which side u weld, being they are v8 rods they share the same journal, both sides are not equal)I installed an aluminum machined blank (to protect the jounal bearing surface, before welding.). Came out great.

Next step u have to do is take youre stock size crank and have the machine shop grind youre rod journals ten thousand under , leave the main journal alone(unless they are worn)

At this point my buddy says to me "Carl u spent all this time on these rods" "Have them resized". I took them to 3 differnt machine shops. They all said it could not be done. The fourth said no problem. got them back in 3 days

Ok got the crank , rods, what i do about the piston pin holes?. I had the piston pins enlarged to .930. I than made aluminum piston buttons.

Built the block, installed it, motor runs like a sewing machine. I finally nfinished a project!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

Yeah, after you spend twice as much on them

The rod journal on the 2.2 is 50mm, the LS1 is 53.3mm. .25mm = .010", so you'd have to have .140" over bearings to make up that 3mm. Don't see those being available, so now you're welding up the big end and re-sizing like turbo-king.

And I don't see there being room on a 2.2 rod journal for another 4mm's width of bearing, so now you're milling down the sides also.

Just doesn't seem cost effective to me.
