    Legal racing in San Diego

I just found out that San Diego has LEGAL races on Friday nights at Qualcomm stadium. 1/8 mile, dual trees, timeslips w/60 ft times! Heck...COPS race out there! If you beat them, they give you a 'Beat the Heat' T-shirt. Oh....I can't wait to get the GLHS back together!
    http://www.racelegal.com/news/news.asp
As I have never raced and am really not familiar with 1/8th mile, what should I expect from a GLHS with Stage 2, +20's, 3" SV & exhaust, 14psi on street tires? I'm thinking it would be 7.50 or slower
    Here's the requirments:
    7.50 & SLOWER
    Battery Secured
    Cut Off Switch (relocated battery)
    Radiator Overflow Tank
    Dual Throttle Springs
    Hoses Secure / No Leaks
    Street Legal Exhaust
    Approved Tires
    All Wheel Studs and Nuts
    DOT Approved Helmet
    Full Face Helmet/Goggles (Open)
    Seats Secure
    Seat Belt Stock
    Window/Window Net
    Driveshaft Loop with Slicks
    Working Headlight and Taillight
    Approved Clothing (note 1)
    No Loose Items
    Brake Check
    Neutral Safety Switch (AT)
IF db needed / enter reading
    Approved Nitrous Bottle (note 3)
    Nitrous Dump Tube (note 1 & 2)

they've had it there for 3 years or so. Just after they started really cracking down on the "illegal" street racing which became an issue after F&F came out. They were thinking about canceling the racing because of funding issues last year.

Are they out there racing cop cars? or are they just racing their own rides??? Cause racing the cop car would be fun. Too bad it's not a full 1/4 nice to have tree's and time slips though.

I think that's great. It's good to see the police get involved with a fun and positive alternative to illegal street racing!

I agree. More cities should follow their lead.

That's kind of like our street legals here, but ours are so far out of town that a lot of people don't go, and you only get about 4-6 runs in a night. They used to have some running down at airports too, and the cops where there keeping things under wraps, and of course idiots complained that it was promoting bad behavior on the street and it was shut down.

I used to watch the monster trucks and tractor pulls there when it was still Jack Murphy stadium.

They used an abandoned air field a few years ago, I missed it but the cops would race with there cop cars. It was a huge success as the local race track only runs Friday nights and its sporadic at best. Then some snitty owners got involved as the contract said NO DRAG racing, only other forms of racing so they cancelled it. No one replaced it,

Three years ago here in tucson at the strip, a cop drove his cruiser in (everyone was watching). He hopped out, removed two slicks from the trunk, bolted them on and raced. He wound up running my brothers csxt, cop 15.1 to bro's 14.5. My brother said it felt VERY weird, but after the race officer took some time to chat and compliment the csxt.

Re: Legal racing in San Diego

    ^^Thats awesome.
That reminds me, last year or the year before, I a cop had a Honda all decalled out for racing at the track only, had the cop colours, light bar etc, he raced alot and it was weird at first, lol! I never got to race him but lots of others did. Guess they cancelled it, he hasn't been out anymore but ironically, street racing and deaths caused by it have gone up, dramatically.

    Just to rant for sec!

How come these idiots today can't race and stay alive? me and my buddies used to street race all the time, this was in the 80's but so what? we would rip around the Lower Mainland half cut, not that thats, cool but nature of the beast back then, we would speed like maniacs and NONE of us ever got into an accident or even hurt anyone, I don't get it??????? And before you say its the cars, I call BS. New cars have ABS, air bags etc, Civics aren't that fast stock. WE had IROC's, Mustang GT's, old hot rods, I had a very warmed over Civic that would destroy said cars, souped up Rotaries etc?????

Re: Legal racing in San Diego

I think mainly it's the attitude of todays "kids".

I was racing an Integra Type-R one day down one of the main drags in town.

There was no traffic immediately in front of us.... no lighted intersections, etc.

We both got on it at the same time... stayed neck and neck up to about 75 or 80 (45 zone where everyone usually does 50 or so) when we started catching up to the traffic ahead of us.

I immediately let off the gas as soon as I realized we were catching the traffic quite rapidly.

Not wanting to "lose", Type-R boy keeps it floored and starts weaving in and out of traffic to show how "fast" and "cool" he is.

I caught him a few weeks later and ripped him a new @$$hole (verbally), in front of all his buddies.

I think video games may have something to do with it also. Kids think that tearing it up in Gran Turismo or Forza makes them Mario Andretti. They hop in their car and go street racing because 'I can dodge all the cross traffic in Need for Speed Underground'....
    I've actually hear that

Barona is a much nicer track run by friendly folks and they have legal gambling and drinking right next door at the casino. Wicked sticky first 60' of track too, not that it would help me any... Less than 50 miles from you

The 3.0 Turbo should be in San diego on the june 30th-July 3rd or something like that. Visiting a girl.

Would have to get lucky to pass inspections since the car is open downpipe. Where else to race in San Diego?

Only Barona and the stadium from what I know. I work with a guy that owns a fast AWD Eclipse. He's raced at both and done illegal street racing too. Those are the only places he knows of.

Maybe we should hook up to chat and inspect each others rides if you have time. The GLHS should easily be done and realigned by then *crosses fingers*

Well, heads are torqued down, and oil pan is on. I better get working faster.
I also pressure washed the engine bay.
Oh, and then I also took my turbo to get balanced this afternoon.
