Ok, took photo's of the equal length axles and the different bearings!

Working on a Daytona and clued in I should do this. Looking at the lengths, I think you could use a car one on an L body with no issues.

Ok, so measuring the actual jack shafts-

    L body- 7 3/4"
    G body etc- 8 3/8"
    Van- 9 3/8"

I measured the spline part, L body is shorter overall at 8 3/8 BUT critical measurements IE U-joint center to the first seal surface and gear are the same as G body/Vans, they measure at 9 1/8"

The L body has its own unique mounting bracket for the bearing, G body's and maybe Dynasty's, use the same mounting bracket per say, as in they both meet at the same point at the block, van's, the bracket is longer to make up for the longer jack shaft. Bottom pic.

Axles are the same, L body the shortest and 5speeds are small spline, 88-90 auto's are large spline, then the cars are next aprox 1 inch bigger, then the vans by another inch. In another thread, the Dynasty axles are supposed to be another length but I haven't measured one.

    Per Dave, part numbers-

The Daytona shaft is pn# 5212992, and bracket is 4505007. The minivan shaft is pn# 5212979 and the bracket is 4384770.

Yeah I'm pretty sure all the intermediate shafts are all the same length, because they all bolt up to the same spot on the engines. They just changed the outboard axle length to fit whatever body it's in.

Simon, which is what in your pictures? Any chance of getting measurements of them all as well for future reference?

The shortest is the L body of course with its specific bearing, followed by the Daytona etc shaft then the Minivan.

Where do you want me to measure? Total length or ?

I used an A568 with its intermediate shaft with 88+ auto omni shafts in my GLH just fine.

U-joint cener to the end the axle slides in would be good.

Is the other side of the u-joint the same length in each application?

Good tech work Simon, KC article stuff for sure

Yeah, looking at the difference, it should work fine, and you have proved it does,

Thanks, just finally got off my azz and got it done.

I'll compare brackets too, as I have car ones and a factory 5 speed van setup at my shop.

Yep, that sounds good. Basically thinking that a measurement would be useful to someone that stumbles across a part and is trying to figure what it fits.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Simon!

Seems like this could be a nice addition to the KC? If not as an article, then as a snippet? If just hate to see bits of useful info lost to the background...

I found out the bracket on the minivan is different, hence why they bolt up in the same spot.

Wonder if this auto large spline L body axle thing could be useful with caravan transfercase fitment.

the L body bearing and bracket are not unique , just early
-same as any other 85-6 turbo car

the difference to the daytona one is due to the design change that happened at the same time the 520/555 came along

if that daytona jack shaft was for an 85-6 it would be the same as the L body one

Good to know, don't think I've ever seen a Daytona with the L body style setup.
