    Talk to me about converters.

    85 Dodge 600 2.2 TII

Plans: 20lbs boost (TOPS, probably never get to more than 17. Only shooting for a 14sec 1/4), +20's, stock I/C, 2.5" exhaust, stock T3 turbo.

Later in the week (whenever I get paid for the van I'm selling ) I'm ordering a new tranny from Cindy with extra clutch packs, modded valve body, line adjustment plug, drain plug.

My question, do you guys think I'll need a Heavy Duty converter for this pig? I don't plan on making a serious amount of power, but I did destroy the shiz out of my stock tranny with 15lbs boost. A HD converter is 350 bucks + shipping whereas a stock one is about 100.

Re: Talk to me about converters.

Heavy duty cannot hurt, especially if you intend to do alot of power-braking for launching. Stocker might last forever if you drive conservatively.

The only variable here is that "heavy duty" is one of those arbitrary marketing terms like "professional grade" and "new and improved".

What is actually done to upgrade the converter?

Re: Talk to me about converters.

All of our converters are the same aren't they? As long as they're 4 bolt.

I don't know what the definition of a HD converter is. I so dearly enjoy brake boosting. Nobody ever believes Automatics can do such good burnouts.

Re: Talk to me about converters.

NO 2 converters are the same. If you are getting a built tranny, why destroy it with a cheap converter to save $150???????

Get a good one with HD internals, bearings etc from Hugh's, Nan etc. Don't skimp, if you do and it blows, it can take out the rest of the trans.

Re: Talk to me about converters.

i hear neon converters are better than our stockers. roller bearing stuff inside.

they are all lockup though so youd have to run a lockup shaft. dunno how that works with a non lockup trans?

I've told you already, putting a LU on the van-so far, it looks like a simple input shaft change and put the solenoid and some valves in the valve body. Then changing the final drive back to the stock 3.02 from the 2.60 I have. The Neon converter is cheap and I'll get Rob to turn the code on or I'll just use a toggle switch.

So...is it possible for me to use a lockup neon converter with the stock input shaft?

Mini van converter has worked great in my Shadow for about the past 3 years lots of burnout's and brake boosting.
My car has about 75 passes with it in and it has no sign of getting weak.

No, they don't fit, different spline count on the input shaft.

Don't know your power but for sure on the weight, That's why its hard sometimes to suggest parts, what works for some doesn't work for others,

Re: Talk to me about converters.

Other than stall being too low, I'm very pleased with how durable my Hughes converter has been. I think it's at least 4 or 5 years old and it has taken everything i have thrown at it.

so you can call these companies up and just ask for a TC for a Chrysler a413? Or do you have to specify you want a beefy one? How much do they run? I am going to need one soon so how much should i save?

The companies listed know if you ask for a built TC for our A413's.

    Figure on $3-400.
