    voltage regulator?

88 shadow es was a T1 now its T2 hybrid (T1 harness with the added charge air temp sensor)

cruising to my parts store today to get some goodies, my gauges got CRAZY bright! i looked down.. almost 18 volts! if i cruise at a low rpm its fine but if i get near 3000, it sky rockets again. i have a new alt in it. prob 2 or 3 weeks old tops. called my buddy at autozone to see if the regulator is in the alt. he said it shows up as externally regulated. is there a regulator i can replace? or is it in the computer itself? how do i take care of this?

    thanks,
    nick

    Re: voltage regulator?

The voltage regulator is built into the SMEC. 1st. check that the alternator field driver wire (dark green) is not shorted to ground. 2nd. check ALL your grounds. And 3rd. that the SMEC is seeing battery voltage . Place a voltmeter between the power ground (black) and ign. feed input (dark blue) wires at the at the SMEC. If the SMEC does not see enough voltage, the voltage regulator in the SMEC continues to increase the field current to the alternator. Check the connections at the SMEC to.
