All that info is readily available. I will be doing up a KC article soon.

87 and up turbo and V6 trans.

86 and older are small spline and weaker TC mounting pads.

    No advantage of an '87 T-I 413 over a '92 T-I?

I remember seeing the Phoenix Convention tapes and how Ed Peters talks about how the 555 improved from '87 to '89 I believe.

Re: no auto trans writeup in kc?

My favorite is the '89+ turbo atx. They have the "V6" internals stock. Which is really just a moved snap ring groove on the direct drum. pretty much everything is interchangeable among the 31th series. other then that the big axles started in '87. The 4 bolt converter started in '86. The 3 bolt one only works with a 6 bolt crank & the pump with the notch type gears rather then the flats on the 4 bolt converter/pump setup...

Don't forget then they got solid pinions, Neon's got cast planetaries-yuck and Dodge upgraded the front planetary to a 5 pinion.

Nope, and maybe the 92 could be worse, see above.

Simon you wouldn't believe it but the cast planets can go 8 seconds in the 1/4 ! I usually don't use the 5-pinion planets when the lube mods are done... I find the planets get starved for oil and that's the real reason they fail.

Lol The car weighed 2450 lbs & had nitrous on it also. There is one hole in the Valvebody & another in the output shaft & you're done. 50 psi lube instead of 15 & planets/bearings that hold together.

I've got an anecdotal story about my 1990 auto trans that you might find interesting.

The guy that did my motor swap sucked (long story). He forgot to install a clamp on the line going from the transmission to the cooler. One day, that line popped off, and transmission fluid went EVERYWHERE. I clamped the line, refilled the transmission, and there was no damage at all.

I read somewhere that the 3-speed FWD transmissions were basically front-wheel-drive versions of the 727 Torqueflite. Is that true?

If you pretty well shut if off right away, you won't do any damage.

I've heard the same rumour too, not sure if its true as nothing really interchanges.

Basically. All mopar 3 speed autos from the late 80s and older are pretty much the same. The a604 is completely different. I believe it doesn't have any bands in it. From the outside it looks the same besides having the solenoid pack.

According to Wikipedia, the FWD transmissions are derivatives of the TorqueFlite. So the internals are just based off of the TorqueFlite.

That's what I said in post 13 . I have taken apart both right next to each other. The 413 looks like a shrunken 727.

Re: no auto trans writeup in kc?

Torqueflite is just the name chrysler calls them. Chrysler makes them I think. 90's dodge rams with the 4 speed autos are also torqueflites. Basically a 727 with an overdrive unit bolted on the back.

Re: no auto trans writeup in kc?

The A413 is really closer to an A904 (original aluminum Torqueflite). As for the name, Chrysler's first full automatic was called Powerflite and was a 2 speed unit, when it became obvious that more gears were needed, Chrysler engineers came up with the 3 speed unit and called it Torqueflite. The old cast iron Torqueflites are way different internally as far as the gear set layout than the later ones. Yes, Chrysler builds their own transmissions except for some of the Mitsubishi built cars and the Plymouth Cricket. They also provided transmissions to AMC after they switched from Borg-Warner units.
