Whine noise

A523 (large spline, 3.77 fdr) makes a faint to semi noticeable whine noise when coasting in gear. Apply the throttle, push clutch or roll in Neutral and the noise goes away. Time for a new set of differential bearings ? Transmission has 241k on it and other than that noise functions very well I think.

Wait, if you accelerate the noise goes away? So what's the problem?



241K sounds like a pretty good lfespan for a trans, but I've had a 568 that whined since about 15K miles. Rebuilt it recently all new bearings, brass and shift forks etc and it still whines. Much less now but still audible.

I thought it was normal for an A568 to have a bit of whine because of the coarse gear pitch?

Not sure but it would make sense I guess. Since this a later 523 (94 to be exact) and according to some here is almost into 568 territory when it comes to the revised gear set they have ?

Yeah, imo the later 523s are virtually indestructible when you are tbi powered. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're going to be dropping the engine/trans.

Its too bad there isnt a Quaife option for the 523 anymore.

I had a 3.77 543 that would make some gear noise when coasting/zero load, especially in fourth gear. And that trans had 60,000 miles on it. Not sure if the noise went away when I replaced the differential bearings but the passenger side diff bearing had some serious pitting going on.
