New best with my beater on the tubular header!

I took the beater/test bed Daytona out last night since the temps are back in the resonable range ever since I did the tubular header on the car. Best back then on the stock manifold was...

    RT: .018
    60': 2.313
    330': 6.121
    1/8: 9.104
    MPH: 82.07
    1000: 11.644
    1/4: 13.800
    MPH: 105.20

Well here it is from last night, same 20 psi but on the header, 7* cooler ambient, similar humidity...

    RT: .009
    60': 2.401
    330': 6.152
    1/8: 9.079
    MPH: 83.91
    1000: 11.577
    1/4: 13.674
    MPH: 107.59

    RT: .080
    60': 2.264
    330': 5.977
    1/8: 8.908
    MPH: 83.68
    1000: 11.411
    1/4: 13.508
    MPH: 107.88

    RT: .090
    60': 2.297
    330': 5.969
    1/8: 8.874
    MPH: 84.73
    1000: 11.358
    1/4: 13.447
    MPH: 108.08

Not bad! It ran three other 108.1-108.3 mph runs ranging from 13.72-13.91.

    I'm pretty pleased for a $500 car!

Here is a breakdown for those interested.

'88 Shelby Z, faded blue in three different shades
    Stock T2 longblock, 555
MP plus turbo (.63 exhaust, stock otherwise)
    1 3/4" EQ tubular header
    stock 2 1/4" SV
    2.5" DP, 3" exhaust
+20's, AFPR, 5th inj, MP ecu, 12* base
    Spearco FMIC with 2.25" in/out
    20 psi, pump 93

I think that about covers it. Time for some slicks and 12's!!

I really really really need to get going on that divorced external wastegate... but it'll for sure be out of fuel then. The thing drives rich as-is and runs on the ragged edge in the cool air.

That SV has got to be a serious choke point, the thing is rediculously quiet at WOT. It's way louder at lower throttle input, ha!

I noticed that with my daytona. I was running an open downpipe and at WOT it really wasn't loud.

I like these mods you are doing. You've already done much better on previous projects but picking apart some of the OEM failures is fun!

Yeah, it really is. Don't get me wrong, I still have lots of very trick and cool 8valve stuff for the other car that is in the works, but it's pretty neat to feel this thing run pretty good with some very simlistic mods.

I really wonder with a divorced gate setup and a quickie intake manifold job how quick the thing can run. I'm assuming it will be well out of compressor wheel at that point though.

For fun I ran this car on a friends Dynocom dyno instead of the 248C at our shop and it made 271 whp 310 wtq! Pretty amusing, albeit quite higher than I think it actually makes. It does 249 on our dyyno, 290 tq.

    Very impressive Aaron.

Could you speak to any gains that may be had by going with the external gate? I searched for one of your quotes on the subject the other night and just could not find the one I was looking for.

Look up Viper and wastegate and that should find something. That was part of the subject matter in that thread from what I remember. (fail)

Re: New best with my beater on the tubular header!

Marion, just a Mopar ECU and a zener diode on the map.

Cordes, I just think there are very large gains to be had by not forcing the turbine wheel exiting gasses and the wastegate discharge to collide in such a short amount of space and time, then exit such a tiny opening (2 1/4" in my case).

The TU 3" piece showed very impressive gains IIRC, something like 30ft/lbs. And it obviously still has both exhaust exits merging in that small area. Albeit, it is by far teh easiest and best gain to be had there IMO, but for myself I can easily make an external gate flanged off of the turbine housing and either recirculate it far later in the exhaust stream, or dump it divorced like I did on my old '86.

    Did that answer it?

That is pretty much what I recall. I think there may have been a real word anecdote in the quote I was looking for, but your summation clears up the fog of doubt for me.

    Thanks.
