broken head bolt on a 2.5 turbo

Helping one of my buddies swap a garrett on his 90 spirit es and the #4 head bolt on the back of the engine broke off because it was all corroded. There is about 1.5 inches of the bolt sticking out so I could grip it with something, but it feels like it is seized in there good. I think we might need to locate an oxy-acetylene torch to heat the block up. What should we do here?

Spray some rust-b-gone or equivalent on it, let it sit and then try. I'd use a propane torch though. Oxy-Acetylene may get it too hot?

I've also read to drip candle wax on it, the wax will wick thru the threads and free it.

OH, obviosly u dont have the meens right now, but if ur ever doin a complete rebuild and break a bolt off in the block, leave it! have the block thermo cleaned and after they will just fall right out. when i did the motor in my first car, broke 6 exhaust studs, off(1976 cordoba org 360), my uncle baked it then did a hot bath for me got it back. 2 of them worked there way out in the cleaning process and the other four came out w/ pliers, all brand new, shiney, and everything.

personally i say set it so its level and soak it with pb or something for a couple days and re apply like 6 times a day

and one of these http://www.speedwaymotors.com/HEAD-S...TOOL,2617.html helps break them off more flush

Same thing happened to me a while back on one of the many LeBaron convertibles I had. Propane + PB + damn good vice grips = Bolt coming out with no problem

    I've heard use tapping oil.
Last time it happened to me I sprayed it and used a pipe wrench.

I agree with the PB and stuff but I'd take an old bolt and lay it flat across the top of the broken bolt ... weld it on with a stick welder.

Re: broken head bolt on a 2.5 turbo

while doing my first HG job ever my #7 bolt broke off with about an inch sticking out of the block. back then i thought a torquing sequence was only required for head re-installation luckily there used to be a good shop just across the street so we pushed the tona over there and they welded some old bolt to the stub and then it came out with a socket just fine

Re: broken head bolt on a 2.5 turbo

I just took two broken headbolts out of an old 87 2.2 block. I had NOWHERE NEAR 1.5" to work with! on one i think i had about 3/8" above the block.

    Tools i used

    HAMMER

    AIR HAMMER

and also a washer to protect adjacent block surface.

Used vicegrips and channel locks to turn them out once i had loosened them enough.

Absolutely smack the ---- out of the top of it with a hammer. If i had a flat bit for my air hammer i would have used that but i just used the hammer. You're not going to hammer it through the block so dont worry, just hit it hard, over and over. Dont miss and hit the block! Cover the block surface with something just in case.

On the one that had only ~3/8" showing i wasnt able to get a good grip with the channel locks after hammering so i used a flat chisel type tip on the air hammer to pound a slot into it and then hit it back and forth (rotationally) with the air hammer until it loosened up and i turned it out with the pliers.

Then i took a stretched or somehow trashed headbolt and cut slots in it with a cutting wheel like a tap, and used it as a thread chaser to clean the holes/threads up. Worked great.

Dont push the red button. You hear me?
