I'm thinking of replacing the forged crank with a cast...
What are the pros and cons?
in what motor?
Just because you rarely give me the chance to do this!!!!
What sub-forum is this thread in
haha TIII
Cast is lighter than forged. I wanted a forged crank for my 2.2 buildup but couldnt find one in the condition I wanted. (No cutting/undersized bearings)
So I found another cast crank in perfect condition and was offered it for a price I couldnt pass up ($20 ) so thats the direction I'm going.
ask Simon.
He has not broken a crank yet (knock on wood) just wiped it out from other internals going off and taking out the bearings
he's using a 2.5 bottom end isnt he, so that would be cast? And I believe he is making some good power... I may have just found my answer on to or not to.
----, I'm learning from Simon... Something is going to break now
Yes all 2.5 cranks are cast ( unless you have the forged blank like i do) he is making real good power with his flying tool shed
and you can use any 2.5 CB crank you can find .
Simon and I were just talking about just puting in forged 2.5 8v pistons in his next block. like the 2.5 hybreads do.
Helloooooooooo, durrrrrrrrrrrrr, anyone home,
A few guys are making more power than me and no issues. I have read a cast crank could be better as it flex's before breaking while a forged will just snap. True or false, I don't know. Either way, not many have broken a crank so your safe and yes, the benefit is quicker rev's so no expensive flywheel to buy,
We figure I am making 450 at the wheels to do my times so thats abuse, plus the weight, auto and I drive it everyday, even winged,
I am using 8 valve pistons as my head has been milled too much and I hate using spacers and thicker gaskets, ala Cometics as they friggin leak,

Simon thank you SiR for chiming in
Cast it is
Clayton, I had a 2.5L TIII shortblock built for my SL so it's got a cast crank now. I'm not worried about it, although I did use the ARP main studs and rod bolts with it. I was originally going to have it rebuilt with the original 2.2L TIII (forged) crank, but then I found it had about 1/8" of crank walk so it had to be replaced. Since the Lancer is little on the heavy side I figured I could use the additional torque to make it more fun on the street. I won't be making nearly enough power to break a 2.5L cast crank anyways haha.
didn't your car misfire on the top end so that mph is a bit low.

why didnt anybody point out how there was only 2 people (right?) that ever broke a crank... and one broke a cast so he switched to a forged then he broke that one to
i mean i hope im not making stuff up... and believing it cuz that would be really bad
I just put a cast crank in mine, seems to be very rev happy, I guess we will see how it holds up.
Yeah. It was getting massive spark blowout in most of 3rd and all of 4th. You can see it in the datalogs it so bad. I have no idea what the mph would have been. Maybe 115, who knows dont like to bench race.
I totally agree it has taken a shitload of abuse. Dont get me wrong there. And, im sure it will be just fine. Seems the tune is the critical part of holding the motor together, be it crank or piston. But, I just wanted to make sure were sharing total facts here, and you, nor I have ever dynoed that high. Wasnt bashing or trying to say it hasn't held up to alot of abuse because it has. You have a fast beast, no denying that.
