    JE Forged Piston Damage

Ok so I thought all I needed was a turbo however the pistons look like hell. They are some JE's never ran lean according to my XD-16 but I have a feeling the timing was advanced too much. I had 150ish compression across all four. However they are all black #2 is the worst with some crusty stuff on the top. I will be getting pics asap. The head looked ok white exhaust valves but nothing looked damaged. Hopefully somebody with more experience can help me out. Another thing to note never saw over ~14psi.

    Thanks, Chris

Doesn't look like anything wrong with the pistons. Either it was rich with fuel, burning oil, or junk gas.

There isn't anything wrong with those pistons that I can see. It is apparant that you are burning oil however.

Omg awesome I was so worried Thank you Now the next problem is the scoring in the cylinder wall does it look serious? I can easily feel the pitting with my finger.

Ya the oil is my E1 turbo blowing out oil under boost my lower intercooler hose was developing table spoons fairly quickly.

    Thank you very much.

    Re: JE Forged Piston Damage

Do you have a better pic of the scratch or scoring? If you catch a finger nail, you need a rebore.

Pistons look fine, tons of oil but fine. That dish looks very shallow?

Pistons will get black after about a minute of run time.

The dishes are much smaller on a 2.2 than a 2.5 simon.

Simon you can download the original picture there's a save button near the bottom and then zoom in on the score mark but I will try and get an even better pic later today. I have no real finger nails lol but i can feel the mark with my finger. What kind of consequence would I have if it is too rough but I don't do anything about it?

    Re: JE Forged Piston Damage

Added 3 new pics of the scored mark. I can catch it with my fingernail. Other areas of that wall have marks on them that I can see but not feel. I think I am going to pull the piston and bring it to the guy who built the motor. What kind of things can cause marks like this and what can happen if I leave it alone. Busted ring land?

    Thanks, Chris

    Re: JE Forged Piston Damage

You won't break a ring land, it will cause low compression.

That's can be caused by water in the cylinder rusting the bore, or maybe wrong timing, I really can't see any other reason for that, unless its a bad casting or it was already there when it was built.

    Re: JE Forged Piston Damage

Well it definitely wasn't there when it was rebuilt ~ 6 months of driving and 4k miles I think. The good thing is that cylinder still has 150+ compression even with that mark Funny you mention the water I think that is the cylinder that had a pin hole leak in the head to a water jacket but that was before the rebuild...now its got a new head. Maybe the water weakened the metal and it finally let go? So should I hone that cylinder and rering or just put it back together?

    Thanks, Chris

    Re: JE Forged Piston Damage

It will leak more when running,

If you had a leaking head, that caused it. If you can catch a fingernail on it, honing won't get it out, if it does, you'll have excessive bore clearance.

You really have 3 options, leave it, new bigger pistons or do up another block.

    Re: JE Forged Piston Damage

Well new pistons is not an option. Not going to buy another $500 set when I have some right here. I have a common block sitting in my garage but I don't really have the time to take the motor and all that out. Going to university now and so time is limited.

What will it leak more when running? Compression? So Simon you don't think it is beneficial at all to hone the wall any? I was thinking to smooth that scratch out not really take it out completely. What worries me the most is that same cylinder has other markings in it that can be seen but not felt. Something must be causing it and I really would like to know what so it doesn't get progressively worse.

    Re: JE Forged Piston Damage

If you don't have time or money, leave it alone, you'll have slightly lower compression but not enough to worry about. It should smooth out over time.

I think we already figured out the cause,

Is it safe to soak the piston and rod in B-12 Chemtool to clean off the carbon deposits?

    Re: JE Forged Piston Damage

CRC 3017 is a gasket remover

Heres the msds its mostly acetone. Ill just use pure acetone. It doesn't seem like it's corrosive to metals at all.

    Thanks for the help Simon
